5.0 out of 5 stars a book that needed to be written, 19 Jan 2003

This review is from: The Rise of the Player Manager (Penguin business) (Paperback)
this is an outstanding book, with a very innovative and insightful approach. It focuses on one of the phenomenons of our time, that everyone feels, but has never been so well articulated or analysed as in this book: the fact that we all have to execute as well as manage, that we all have to do as well as think, that we all create something as well as conceptualize it. We often forget that in the advanced economies, the population of what we generically call 'management'is among the largest constituent part of the work force. This book focuses on that constituency and on what they do and how it is changing. This is an ancient activity given a modern voice and intriguing character scenarios. It is analysed at the macro level, in terms of the individuals themselves, and also how it connects to overall teams. A most refreshing approach, especially when compared to the traditionally dry and starchy approach to this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and useful read, 3 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rise of the Player Manager (Penguin business) (Paperback)
Well written, with in-depth case studies to bring the issues alive, this is an enjoyable read. Its theme - of the player manager - is definitely one for our times. The book contains some great insights and plenty of advice and ideas that can be applied easily in 'the real world'. Well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars These folks really get it, 15 July 2002

This review is from: The Rise of the Player Manager (Penguin business) (Paperback)
The Rise Of The Player Manager strikes at the heart of the duality many of us struggle with conciously and unconciously as we fulfill our complex roles in the modern workplace. I had often perceived this split roles existence without fully understanding the causes or effects. Mr. Augar and Ms. Palmer have brilliantly articulated the roles we engage and the personalities that play out these roles. I can sleep better knowing that what I thought was probable schizophrenia was really the undefined tension of two necessary manifestations of myself in the workplace.
Every corporate manager should read this book. To better deal with the everyday challenges of being a Player Manager. Great book!
