Patrick Doyle is having a fantastic year, composing the brilliant action score to Thor and the more minimalist La Ligne Droite. In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, he has gone in the same direction as Thor, and has produced one of the finest action scores of 2011 in the process.

Doyle's string writing is wonderful and it makes up the largest part of the orchestral ensemble. On top of this, there are occasional uses of the choir. In some of the more action based tracks, there is a decent percussion section which keeps the pace going without becoming overbearing and gives a primitive sound to the music. There is some use of electronics, however these are infrequent. I thought the entire album was of exceptional quality, but I particularly liked Track 6 "Off You Go", which had a great variation of the main theme and the penultimate track "Caesar and Buck" which had a sombre but beautiful tone to it.

The score runs for about an hour, and I would have liked it to be longer purely because I enjoyed it so much. I feel this is an album that has large replay value, not only because it sounds fantastic, but there are intricacies in Doyle's writing that you might miss the first time round.

I have read criticisms of the score that have said it sounds too close to the style of Hans Zimmer and Co. I would disagree with that - some of the tracks contain techniques for writing for strings which Zimmer and Co use regularly, but if you scratch beneath the surface, it has all the complexities and personality that you would associate with Doyle.

Overall, this is a wonderful soundtrack. To my ears, Doyle has managed to write an orchestral score that sounds modern without being highly derivative. I haven't seen the film yet, so I don't know how well it works within the film, but I can assure you, on CD, this is an absolute beauty.

Doyle Does It Again! 21 Aug 2011
By jedibear - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is the second film score from Mr. Doyle this summer...the first one was for "Thor", a sweeping, adventurous romp that combined a sense of grandeur with familiar pounding action cues that complimented the God of Thunder's screen exploits perfectly, as well as an album that is a good listen on it's own.

Now Doyle rounds out the summer with his musical contribution to the long-running Planet of the Apes series. He follows his own muse here, and to some this score may sound a bit like the one he created for Thor, but I think the differences are apparent with repeated listening. The action cues percolate along with a heavy percussion, but not as overwrought as the variety of beats that Elfman bought to his "Apes" effort years ago.

Instead, Doyle focuses on emotion with his score....much like the movie itself. Tracks like "Lofty Swing"."Muir Woods" and "Off You Go" soar with feeling and the more action-style cues like "Bright Eyes Escapes" and "Zoo Breakout" also have an emotional pull that compliments the movie perfectly and sound great.

This score works as a stand-alone listen, cued up in the order heard in the film (always a nice touch) and can stand proudly with the best of the whole "Apes" series of music...

Looking forward to more "Apes" adventure....and more from Mr. Doyle...

Very good score 17 Aug 2011

Even with definite shades of the Media Venures/Remote Control "Zimmer" sound so prevalent today, this is a very good score for an amazong movie.

Patrick Doyle has a gift for utilizing the Zimmer sound better than the Zimmer/MV/RC organization that created and evolved that style.

The african percussion and vocals are more apparent here that any of the online samples suggest, though there is nothing overbearing, and the themes are beautifully written and rendered.

Good, but a little generic. 16 Aug 2011
By J. Hart - Published on Amazon.com
I really enjoyed the score in the movie, but on album it's not as enjoyable. No real strong themes, and I was reminded a lot of "Pirates of the Caribbean" during the action scenes, which is not exactly an insult but not a compliment either. It's a shame all these classic composers are falling into this same generic sound.
