Patrick Doyle is having a fantastic year, composing the brilliant action score to
Thor and the more minimalist
La Ligne Droite. In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, he has gone in the same direction as Thor, and has produced one of the finest action scores of 2011 in the process.
Doyle's string writing is wonderful and it makes up the largest part of the orchestral ensemble. On top of this, there are occasional uses of the choir. In some of the more action based tracks, there is a decent percussion section which keeps the pace going without becoming overbearing and gives a primitive sound to the music. There is some use of electronics, however these are infrequent. I thought the entire album was of exceptional quality, but I particularly liked Track 6 "Off You Go", which had a great variation of the main theme and the penultimate track "Caesar and Buck" which had a sombre but beautiful tone to it.
The score runs for about an hour, and I would have liked it to be longer purely because I enjoyed it so much. I feel this is an album that has large replay value, not only because it sounds fantastic, but there are intricacies in Doyle's writing that you might miss the first time round.
I have read criticisms of the score that have said it sounds too close to the style of Hans Zimmer and Co. I would disagree with that - some of the tracks contain techniques for writing for strings which Zimmer and Co use regularly, but if you scratch beneath the surface, it has all the complexities and personality that you would associate with Doyle.
Overall, this is a wonderful soundtrack. To my ears, Doyle has managed to write an orchestral score that sounds modern without being highly derivative. I haven't seen the film yet, so I don't know how well it works within the film, but I can assure you, on CD, this is an absolute beauty.
