Product Description

BBC Review

Comedy and music go together like gravel and milkshake. A dire charity single made to help starving kids (but obviously not to boost egomaniac celebrity profiles)? Any single to include Keith Allen? Whatever: laughs and tunes don't mix. This is not to say music isn't often unintentionally funny - like Meat Loaf - or equipped with a sense of humour, like The Streets or The Smiths. But unless you're Spinal Tap or Jack Black in School Of Rock, save the jokes for stand-up.

When The Puppini Sisters appeared with their take on 1940s close-harmony vocal groups, some dismissed their schtick as a novelty. After all, the female trio and their backing band formed after chief Pup' Marcella Puppini watched ace, beguiling, but distinctly comic French animation, Belleville Rendez-vous.

Second album in and there is still a gimmicky feel to what The Puppini Sisters do. But then, the same is true of Nouvelle Vague's soporific cover versions of previously life-affirming songs but that hasn't dulled their popularity among the Facebook and Foccacia set.

The Puppinis (not really sisters) do three types of songs: covers of ancient ditties ("Old Cape Cod" will be familiar to anyone to have heard Groove Armada's "At The River"), covers of newer pop hits ("Walk Like An Egyptian", "Crazy In Love") and their own (the sultry "Soho Nights"). On record all sound silky and sexy like a night in a smoke-filled Parisian jazz club.

Here's a listening experience that is a good laugh, but not in a way that makes you want to glass the musicians. A double bass turns rubbery, the girls croon a song that you've heard a million times but never with as much charm and you may just stop moping and dance.

So there is never an excuse to cover Barry Manilow ("Could It Be Magic?" Nope!) and as a live proposition these ladies far exceed their recordings, but these two negatives don't bury !Ruby Woo.

Instead, this is party music for listeners who don't want anything as predictable as a banging beat or a sample from an old disco tune. For that and for offering something different, give these siblings a spin. --Lou Thomas

Album Description

One year after the release of their debut record `Betcha Bottom Dollar' The Puppini Sisters announce the release their second album `The Rise and Fall of Ruby Woo'.
Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and Stephanie O'Brien led the retro wave in 2006 with their 1940s influenced blend of `pop with swing' and gorgeous sense of glamour and fun.
'The Rise and Fall of Ruby Woo' contains brilliantly original covers of songs such as 'Crazy in Love', 'Old Cape Cod' and the incredible new single 'Spooky', as well a collection of stunning new songs written by the girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD, 21 Nov 2007

This review is from: The Rise & Fall Of Ruby Woo (Audio CD)
I was already a fan of the Puppini Sisters's first CD and they are an amazing live act. I think the new CD is excellent, with really memorable new songs like Jilted and Soho Nights, and you've got to hear their cover of Beyonce's Crazy In Love - brilliant. It's not as commercial as the first CD, but its a CD I have already listened to many many times, and I really hope they get the chance to make a 3rd CD soon! It also makes me laugh on a regular basis, and I'm making all my friends listen to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rise and Rise of the Puppini Sisters!, 12 Mar 2008
This review is from: The Rise & Fall Of Ruby Woo (Audio CD)
I've listened to this album a lot since I bought it. I bought it because I loved the first album and, after seeing them live in 'Borders' in London, I thought there really was something special about them; something different and exciting from the norm.
So I was a little disappointed in reading some of the reviews about the second album - but I thought I'd give it a whirl; who knows, I might be surprised. I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews! This is a really good album! If you are not one to be hooked by the latest trends and enjoy trying something different; music with a great melody and a style and delivery that will put a smile on your face, then try this. I fail to see how the comments regarding sound quality have arisen and can only think that those making the comments must have had a duff CD. My album sounds crisp, bright and clear - everything you would expect from a quality recording. If you are not sure the Puppini Sisters' style of music is for you, there are plenty of free downloads. I recommend you listen to some of their work; and hope you enjoy this second album as much as I.

Oh my god! I've just seen the video for Spooky... those little vixens look amazing. Had a listen to the rest of the tracks and they just ooze cool... nice to hear a group doing something different for a change. Worth every penny!
