Product Description

The most important contribution of this book is perhaps in the light it sheds on the institutional roots of organizations that sanction the use of indiscriminate violence to advance political objectives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Muslim Civil Society, 20 Dec 2005
By Sakr - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Rise and Fall of Muslim Civil Society (Paperback)
Imady surveys a large number of institutions in which Muslim reformers were involved during the late 19th/early 20th century which have not been covered, as of yet, in a single book. In addition, Imady creates a cohesive context (and plot) that sheds light on why these institutions emerged and why they eventually fell apart. Most importantly, Imady provides a new (institutional) explanation for the phenomenon of Islamic militancy. I only wish Imady had elaborated more on how the fall of Muslim civil society paved the path towards the rise of Islamic militancy.
