Product Description

Product Description

After six years of economic development work in Africa, Ernesto Sirolli witnessed how little most foreign aid programs were actually doing for the people they hoped to help -- from creating a communal tomato field on the banks of the Zambezi river (only to be demolished by the river's hippos at harvest time) to donating snow-ploughs to African nations! However well intentioned, Sirolli points out, inappropriate development often creates more problems than it solves. Thus was the genesis of this exciting and unique alternative to traditional economic development termed 'Enterprise Facilitation' -- where depressed communities can build hope and prosperity by first helping individuals to recognise their talents and business passion, and then providing the skills to transform their dreams into meaningful and rewarding work.

About the Author

Ernesto Sirolli is the recipient of the Silver Jubilee Award for the Best Job Creating Project in Australia. He has six years experience working for local self-reliance in African countries and twelve years implementing Enterprise Facilitation programs in the US and other countries. He lives in St Paul, Minnesota.

Everybody involved with community development should read this book. It has been an excellent resource for my geography teaching.

Format:Paperback
Ernesto Sirolli has led a very interesting life and his tales make great reading. A few comments though. I wonder how well his facilitation model would work in truly poor communities where the physical and financial infrastructure doesn't exist. Sirolli's anti-establishment bent is a bit strong at times, and the editing of the book is poor (a small detail... I suppose he has more important things to do than proofread). Sirolli's book also takes a bit of a strange dip into education, coming-of-age, and politics near the end, which is off the narrow topic of economic development (but on the more interesting topic of total human development). I find some of Sirolli's hopes about bureaucracy becoming lean and nimble very idealistic... deep-seated and arguably permanent forces are to blame for the mechanical way that bureaucracies behave (see Mintzberg). Sirolli's ideas about how important people are to economic growth complement the thrust of Land's scholarly tome "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations".

Overall though, this is a great book by an author who you'd want to meet after finishing it.

Thought provoking 2 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
A thought provoking read that isn't too complex, and it could quite easily of been. There are some useful tips in the book that I have implemented and have got me thinking about the way I deliver and the stories from Ernesto are interesting, but some more detail would have made them more enjoyable to me - more 'case studyish'
