Book Description

24 April 2008 Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural

Horrific, horrendous, unspeakable, The Whitechapel Murderer, Jack the Ripper, stalked the streets of East London in 1888, slaughtering prostitutes and bewildering the police who were hunting him. They never succeeded in apprehending him, and to this day the mystery of his identity remains an enigma. But he did leave clues to his identity, and numerous theories have been entertained throughout the one hundred and twenty years since he held London's East End in his grip of terror.

This book looks at the evidence left by the murderer and the reports and investigative papers which recorded the atrocities that the Ripper performed. It takes time to analyse the existing information and evaluate the letters sent to the police.

It is the strongest and most powerful book ever written on the murders. It dispels a lot of myths attached to the Ripper, and eliminates a lot of the previously conjectured perpetrators, leaving only those who realistically could have been… Jack the Ripper.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book but probably not for the beginner 6 July 2009
Format:Paperback
While this book could serve as a great introduction I find that the absolute beginner should look to another source in order to find out the basic story and favourite suspects before going over the disputes and facts presented here.
The writer does very well at giving concise accounts of various aspects of the case, each in seperate chapters under Victims, Suspects, Investigation, Medical evidence and finally the Conclusion. He busts various myths and dicrepancies of what is already known and gives good solid reasoning (most of the time) and common sense on how things realistically could have happened.
Before this book I had read Jack the Ripper: The Final Chapter by Paul Feldman. The contrast between the two books is staggering. The author of The Final Chapter jumps to illogical conclusions based on poor premises and circumstantial evidence. The stupidity is painful.
On the other hand, while the author of this Wordsworth edition also makes many questionable judgements at least he admits that it is largely based on his opinion and can still be proven wrong. At many points he asks the reader to come to his own conclusions also and makes note that more evidence is needed.
He makes a good case for his conclusions but ultimately, they differ from mine as we all have our own biases. I base my profiling of the killer on what I know from the methods of the US FBI, the author seems to completely disregard the element of serial killer profiling and goes on tradditional motives such as love and money. Which perhaps is another major flaw.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok 31 May 2010
Format:Paperback
A very detailed look at all the available evidence, in fact it gets a little bogged down at times

At the end of the day it still results in guessing and surmising not a real conclusion
