Ripley's Believe It or Not- Strikingly True

This is a wonderful book on virtually every kind of unusual
person or event. For instance, Tim Cockerill (known as the
Great Inferno) gargles hot molten lava. A 6500 year old
baby mummy is depicted in a life-like pose. The artist,
Daniel Ortega of San Diego, Ca. turns ashes of the dead
into beautiful art pieces. A stunning scene of the Kilauea
volcano in Hawaii has been spewing volcanic ash and lava for
almost 3 decades.
A grotesque "Festival of the Skulls" is depicted
in La Paz, Bolivia. A live picture of lightening
was captured by a photographer as the flash hit
the Statue of Liberty on 9/22/10. The smallest house
in Great Britain is a two floor 6 by 10 foot structure
depicted in this book.
A weeping glacier appeared to be carved out of a
rock formation in Svalbard, Norway. There are other
wonders of nature sprinkled throughout the extensive presentation.
The contents of the book are organized as follows:

o Food Arts
o Science and Beyond Belief
The front cover is a stunning apple red with an
open eye looking straight at you. Strikingly True
is a considerable curiosity for the young

So much to learn and awesome photos!

Last spring I took my family to the Ripley's Believe it or Not museum and all of us (grownups included) had a blast learning about all sorts of weird and unexplainable phenomena! Being scientists, my husband and I are always looking for explanations to just about everything and love ecouraging our kids to explore the unknown!
The flashy cover on this book grabs your eye and just MAKES you want to open it and see what is inside! The Table of Contents divides the book into numerous categories like food, animals, body, etc and includes lots of fantastic pictures to capture your attention.
I cannot even begin to describe how much information is incuded in this book! Every page is chock full of facts, figures, and full color photos highlighting some of the most bizzare things I have ever seen. At 256 pages long, it would take you weeks to read everything in it!
Basically, a great encyclopedia of weird phenomena that will catch the attention of old and young alike!

A collectors edition, sure to make a perfect gift for those who love the odd, strange but true.

Once I received the book, I was immediately impressed by the holographic red and silver cover of the new Ripley's Believe It or Not! Strikingly True book. As a child I had always had an interest in the strange and unique. I remember purchasing my first Ripley's book and spending hours just reading and staring at the photos, and sometimes being grossed out, but still loving it. It is quite ironic that my son now has the same type of interests as me and we share that same sense of curiosity in anything strange and out of the ordinary. As a family we always watched the Ripley's Believe It or Not television show and even now we watch re-runs when they are on. When offered the chance to review the new Ripley's Strikingly True book I couldn't email fast enough. I was so excited and so was my son once I told him about it. This book is certainly not like the paperback I had as a child and I consider it a collectors edition. My son has decided it is his book and I now need permission to view it. The colorful pictures bring each oddity to life and this is not a book for the faint at heart. If you have a weak stomach, don't consider even taking a glance at this book, even at the bookstore. Another favorite part of this book for me were the interviews with some very odd and strange people. Ripley's has certainly outdone itself with this beautiful cover and this is a book we will cherish for years to come.
