Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A snazzy portable CD player that goes one step further, The Rio Volt Junior (SP90) will play MP3 files straight from CD-R discs. With one CD-R capable of holding many hours of music, you won't have to change discs all day. While the Rio Volt functions just like an ordinary CD player, if your computer system is capable of producing CD-R or CD-RW discs of MP3 or WMA files then the SP90 makes an ideal companion. It can play the discs as easily as regular audio CDs. You can fit a lot of these compressed music files on one CD, easily over 250 or more tracks.

The SP90 operates a little differently when playing MP3 files. It reads the track, loading it into an internal buffer until it reaches the end of the track. The disc than stops spinning until it starts to read the next track. This buffer is used as anti-skip protection too, but using the SP90 on the move is less than satisfactory. Bizarrely, it's actually better at skip-protection when using a regular audio CD than with MP3s. When it begins to load a new MP3 track it is easily upset by even mild movements, which makes playing MP3s on the move tiresome. Audio CDs are handled much better, although it's not as foolproof as some. The skipping and the lack of a remote make the SP90 better suited to desk-bound work. In which case you'll probably want to also invest in a power adapter.

It is also particularly slow to get going, especially with MP3 discs. There is between 10 and 30 seconds wait before you hear anything. Sound quality is generally very good. The exact sound quality for MP3 and WMA depends on the compression rates picked. High compression rates introduce strange effects, so a data rate of 128 Kbps for MP3 files is recommended. The headphones supplied are better than you might expect and there are a handful of EQ modes to add some bass. The controls are simple and it's easy to use. The LCD screen has no light yet does supply a row of superfluous little dancing men. Track and directory names are scrolled to show the full text.

The trick of playing MP3 files is certainly a good one. You can fit so much music on one disc, hit play and sit back. You can also program in playlists, useful when you've so much on one disc. Switch to shuffle mode and you'll never know what's coming next. The Rio Volt Junior provides an affordable MP3 CD player, but it has some rough edges. If the ability to upgrade firmware is important to you, or you need a remote control--look to the Rio Volt (SP100). If you want all this and more--including an FM Tuner, plus a whopping eight minutes of shock protection, then the Rio Volt SP250 is your best choice. --Miles Berkeley

Manufacturer's Description

The Rio Volt SP90 plays CDs with MP3 and WMA files as well as standard audio CDs. That means you can fit over 20 hours of your favorite music onto a single CD. Plus, the large LCD makes it easy to navigate through song titles and menus. With 120 seconds of skip protection and a battery life of over 15 hours, it delivers the rock solid performance you've come to expect from Rio Digital Audio.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Future of Personal Music Players!, 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rio Volt Jr SP90 MP3 CD Player (Electronics)
Diamond Rio have really a lot to be proud about with the release of "Volt Jr SP90" MP3 and CD Player.
The vast array of formats that this compact wonder machine supports is extraordinary. Any personal music player that plays all formats such as CD, CDRW, CDR, MP3 & WMA has to be admired.
The 15-hour battery life lasts for a full "MP3- designed" CD making the process of charging batteries all the less tedious.
This allows multiple uses apart from casual listening including setting up the player to speakers for external playing. So rather than listening to a repeated 10-track CD in the supermarket it is now possible to hear different songs every time you walk in because of the 15-20 hour CD choice!!!
The sound quality is also excellent. As good as anything I've heard to date.
The headphones provided are of good quality also. They are far removed from the tacky headphones that are often provided with personal music players.
The only thing that is missing from this system is a radio connection. Therefore it is safe to assume that this system is directly targeted at the hard core music buff who solely wants to play his/ her own selections.
All in all, a bargain for under £89.99. Well recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons, 17 Nov 2001
This review is from: Rio Volt Jr SP90 MP3 CD Player (Electronics)
Cons
1: The picture gives you the idea you're getting a bright blue see through cover. Its a plane dark blue one.
2: You will have to buy an adapter costing from £5 - £10 to get the full enjoyment out of the device.
3: The look and feel of the device is cheap. It reminds me of a 1990 pocket calculater.
4: The anti shock is not great. It will skip every now and again. Aswell as this it is quite heavy compared to a disc-man. It isn't suitable for jogging purposes.
5: There is no "lit up screen" so is annoying sometimes.
6:You can tell of a slight quality defect compared to a disc-man.

Pros
1: It is fantastic the amount of music you can fit onto one cd.
2: You can sort out the songs into playlists. You do this before you burn the cd, on the computer. You then browse through the playlists rather than plodding through all the songs to find one track.
3: The ear phones are of good quality.
4: There is a shuffle mode on the device which is usefull to automaticaly browse through and pick songs for you to listen to.
5: While playing a song it scrolls across the name of the track on the large screen.
6: It is at a good price ...

Having said all this I would definately reccomend buying this. If you have an adaptor and you have it playing constantly on shuffle mode its like having your own radio station. I'm extremly happy with mine and have absolutely no regrets of purchasing it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Unit - Needs a little more attention to detail, 27 Jun 2002
By
Michael Crain (Fountain Hills, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rio Volt Jr SP90 MP3 CD Player (Electronics)
This player could have been a best value product if: 1. the battery cover stayed on more securely, and 2. the mode function was explained satisfactorily. (There are many combinations and it's difficult to know how the unit is going to play back in particular modes, e.g. Shuffle-All-Directory, without an involved analysis of the order songs are being played.) What could have been a wonderful three-line display is diminished by some silly dancing man animation on the third line.

On the plus side the main selling feature for me was the remarkable 15-hour battery life. I prefer this to a wall charger any day. It's a good unit for the money. It could have been a great unit for the money.
