Product Description

RIO® SALON LASER™
Real laser hair removal for permanent results
You can now enjoy the benefits of permanent hair reduction without paying for expensive salon treatments. Home laser hair removal is suitable for most areas including facial hair, underarms, arms, legs and bikini line.

The Rio® SALON LASER™ works by sending a laser beam to the hair follicle with enough energy to destroy the root, without it affecting the surrounding area. This process is known as photothermolysis. Unlike home use IPL (Intense Pulse Light) the results of laser treatment are permanent.

Approved for home use, safe 808nm pulsed laser, 4 second treatment, destroys hair root

LASER HAIR REMOVAL OR IPL?
Home use IPL (Intense Pulse Light) recommends continued, on going treatment of the area every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth. This is because IPL doesn't destroy the hair root, so regrowth will occur if the treatment is not repeated every two weeks. Laser Hair Removal technology actually destroys the hair root giving permanent hair reduction.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL EXPLAINED
Lasers deliver an intense beam of light which are made up of a single wavelength or colour. Skin is essentially transparent to light with a wavelength of 808 (nano meters), while melanin containing structures will absorb laser energy of this wavelength. It is therefore possible to target the hair follicle that has a concentration of melanin without affecting the surrounding area.

The light energy absorbed by the melanin pigment results in the rapid heating up of the hair follicle. This heat destroys the cells (papilla) responsible for hair growth. If adequate heating is achieved, then the follicle is permanently disabled resulting in a permanent reduction in hair growth. Note: This is different from home IPL (Intense Pulse Light) which requires continued treatments every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth.

SUITABLE SKIN TYPES
Melanin in the epidermis also absorbs the energy and limits the depth of penetration of the laser light into the skin. Using a light wavelength of 808nm enables treatment of relatively dark skin as well as fair-skinned types. However, laser hair treatment is not suitable for Afro Caribbean or black skin complexions. Laser treatment is also ineffective in removal of white or grey hair. Electrolysis should be considered as an alternative treatment.

HOW TO USE
Obviously read and understand the Information Guide provided before you get started and watch the step-by-step DVD for great tips and techniques. For best results we recommended that you use the unit on hairs that have been trimmed to 1mm-2mm in length.

24 hours before treatment it is very important to do a patch test. The patch test will confirm the maximum power level for your skin type. Each area to be treated must be checked as skin colour can vary.

By using the +/- buttons to select the correct power level for your skin type you're ready to go. Press the enable button once and place the wand on your skin then press and hold the laser button on the wand to zap the hair. You can move onto the next hair to be targeted.

Treated hairs don't fall out immediately but are shed over time as they are released from the hair follicle so be patient. Laser hair removal is generally considered to be effective after 6 treatments over a 6-month period. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) home approved products generally require ongoing treatments every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LASER HAIR REDUCTION

How do I choose between Laser technology and IPL (Intense Pulse Light)?
With IPL in the home the hair root is not destroyed and as such you are required to retreat each area every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth. With Laser technology the hair root is destroyed giving permanent hair reduction.

How should I prepare my skin and hairs for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal does not require any special skin preparations. Laser hair removal is most effective on pale skin so we recommend avoiding sunbathing, sun beds and fake tanning if possible The best results are on hairs which are only 1-3 mm long, we recommend trimming the hairs before treatment. Alternatively, you can shave before treatment as long as the hair is still visible at the root.

How will my skin appear after the treatment?
Generally no perceptible changes will be apparent. A slight redness after treatment may occur but will normally fade over 24 hours. Any localised redness after treatment is caused by the destruction of the hair follicles and is quite normal.

Rio Salon Laser lifestyle imageWhat areas can I treat?
Most body hair can be removed using Laser Hair Removal - the most common areas are the face, underarms, legs, chest, back and bikini line. We do NOT recommend using laser hair removal on eyebrows.

How often can I repeat the treatment?
As long as the hair follicle or surrounding skin is not red, sore or inflamed, treatment can be repeated after 24 hours. Most people wait 3-4 weeks between treatments to see which hairs have been shed and to identify new re-growth.

How many treatments will I need?
Laser hair removal is generally considered to be effective after 6 treatments over a 6 month period. This varies from person to person and the area being treated, hair density, hair growth cycle and colour. Dark hair on fair skin responds best, but both dark and fair hair may take several treatments for long-term results. Some individuals may require more, and some fewer treatments, to achieve satisfaction. Initially you will notice a gradual reduction of the number of hairs. Women who suffer excessive hair growth due to male type hormones are likely to require long term maintenance.

Rio Salon Laser lifestyle imageCan I use other hair removal methods between treatments?
Laser hair removal needs a hair to be present in the follicle, hair removal methods which pluck the hair, such as waxing, epilators and tweezing are NOT suitable for use between treatments. Bleaching hairs is also NOT suitable as it removes the pigment and renders the laser ineffective. Shaving, micro-dermabrasion discs and cream depilatories are ideal for use between treatments.

Is there any aftercare routine I should follow?
Sun exposure or deep tanning should be avoided for at least a week. If the skin is exposed use a sunscreen. Also avoid using abrasive cleansers or skin peeling treatments. Avoid swimming in chlorinated water or using a hot tub for 48 hours.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES ON LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Jinnah Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. Laser Hair Removal with an 800 nm Diode Laser.

STUDY A retrospective study of 1000 women with Fitzpatric Skin Types II and VI.
CONCLUSION For the 500 women treated on their entire face and neck, apparent hair reduction was estimated to be in the 70% to 80% after five to six treatments. In other areas hair reduction was higher ranging from 80% to 95% with the women achieving satisfactory results within four or five treatments.

Harvard Medical School / Laser Center of New York. Effective, Permanent Hair Reduction Using a Pulsed, Diode Laser.

Rio Salon Laser lifestyle imageSTUDY 92 patients treated at two separate facilities, comprising 45 males and 47 females with varying hair colours and skin types. Treatments were made at 0, 1, 3, 6 and 9 months.

CONCLUSION 89% of patients achieved significant permanent hair reduction in this large, long-term, blind, controlled and quantitative study. Many patients had nearly complete, permanent hair reduction after two treatments. Re-growing hair was typically thinner and lighter in colour, adding to the cosmetic benefit.

Harvard Medical School. Study of Diode Laser for Hair Reduction on all Skin Types.

STUDY Forty subjects, 25 female and 15 males with coarse, dark hair on their thigh and backs were treated.

CONCLUSION An 800 nm diode laser provides for effective, long-term hair reduction of medium to coarse pigmented hair, even in some darker-skinned patients. Both short-term hair growth delay and permanent hair reduction was observed. In addition, when hair re-growth did occur, the hair was thinner and lighter.

Japanese Society of Aesthetic Surgery 1999. Lecture presented.

STUDY Reported on a multicenter clinical trial study involving 150 patients. The study involved six treatments given 1 - 2 months apart with patients being followed for at least six months after the last treatment.

CONCLUSION 93% of females and 80% of males had significant permanent hair reduction.

I bought one of these about a year ago and with regular attacks on my legs I now have a permanently bald patch on both shins. So I'm sure it does work eventually. But, it zaps one hair at a time - with an annoying bleep bleep bleep bleep, and the hair doesn't fall out immediately so it isn't easy to tell if it is working at all!

I originally bought this for whole body, but quickly realised it is really for facial and bikini line. It targets individual hairs - thats it! So simple, you just aim at the hair and shoot. I recently bought a x60 laser from Rio and use this for larger areas. For the money the little laser is really good value compared to upper lip and bikini line treatments. Even waxing is more expensive as the Rio doesnt use anything other than lecky. Like all lasers it needs several months to work coz it only kills "live hairs". I thought all hair was dead, but it isnt or at least the folicals arent and new ones pop up all the time, so you have to zap em when they do!

Having had clinical laser hair removal by a Light Sheer Diode Laser on several areas of my body, successfully, and at great expense, I thought this unit would be a nice cheap way to do some other parts of my body in my own time. It took me over a year of clincal treatments to have permenant hair removal and several thousand pounds.
If this is also your idea, forget it, this Laser Hair Remover unit does not have the power required to remove hair. In the clinical laser hair removal that I have experienced, there is one pulse and it hurts. It is like the hair has been plucked. and it is hot, there is a slight burning sensation. Ice packs are applied to cool the skin and extreme care is taken by the clinician to make sure that no damage is done to your skin. 10 days later the hair falls out.
The Rio Salon Laser Hair Remover gives one laser beam that in my model is not even central in the sqare transparent box (making it very difficult to use). Firing the laser does nothing unless the hair is precisesly on the laser. This can take about a minute to actually get one hair. The hair can actually then be burned, but the power of the heating effect of this light beam is not strong enough to be carried down the hair, nor penetrate the skin. If you are lucky enough to have scored a hit on the hair.
It simply does not work. Do not waste your money and if you have bought one, sorry, but if you are spending, the many, hours it requires to self treat yourself and hoping for some hair reduction, you will be dissappointed!

After spending several sessions squinting to target hairs individually (I must have been bonkers to think I could do my whole legs this way!!) I have noticed absolutely no change in my leg hair. Completely useless product. Wish I'd seen the above reviews when I bought this product - save your money & don't buy it.

I own this and I agree with the other review - it will take years - you can only target one hair at a time and it is very difficult, you have to aim directly at the root - which you can't see and even then it will still grow back and may need six to eight blasts! You have no idea if you've been successful 'cos your not allowed to pull it out and have to wait for it drop out in a rew days - If you have a few hairs it might work but you'd be better off going to an electrolysist who knows what they are doing - will still need a few treatments but at least you know they've reached the root correctly. I am thinking of their new one though - promises to scan more hairs...

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Its not powerful enough to have any effect what so ever and it involves too much faffing around, aiming the tiny red light at the hair.

I don't normally write reviews but don't want anyone else to waste their money on such a useless product!
