Good but not THAT good!
on 3 October 2011
I was very intrigued to try out the Rio Professional IPL Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal System as I've heard very mixed things about these home IPL systems and would dearly love a life free of shaving. After it arrived I was a little put off trying it I have to say - after a browse through the instruction booklet it seemed more complicated than I anticipated and fair to say a little dangerous too *if* I didn't get it right and follow those instructions to the letter! Important note - it does come with a DVD and to anyone thinking of buying this and skipping the step of actually watching it, I would strongly advise against it! The booklet isn't enough to equip you to dive to straight in and without a doubt I felt a lot more confident/competent after watching it though.
Whilst I accept that this piece of kit could be dangerous if used incorrectly, I do think the necessity for a key AND secret code to be a little over the top, but then I suppose that's modern day health and safety (gone mad) for you. It was fairly straight forward to use, though there were areas of the body that were very hard, if not almost impossible to apply the wand to as described...I just couldn't find a way to have all the pegs (on the wand head) touching my skin at the same time - like my arm pits. I've never thought I was particularly weirdly shaped there, but there you go...either I am or the manufacturer just didn't encounter this issue with its test subjects who may have been more amply blessed in that department!
In other more flatter areas of my body however, it is very simple to use and the treatment is painless - a waft of burnt hair, and a little skin reddening but as far as the latter is concerned certainly nowhere near as bad as I've had when using a epilator in the past! And does it work? Yes, for certain there are areas where the hair regrowth is significantly finer and I'm fairly sure there are areas where there is nothing growing back at all. How long this would last for without continuing regular treatment I don't know. The manufacturer states that the Rio Professional IPL Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal System has to be used every two weeks for best results and to be honest I just don't have this much time...so I'm using it when I do have the time and shaving the rest of the time. It's important to note that until you have no regrowth in an area, you will still have to shave before treatment to ensure that the light pulses reach the follicles. I've not seen the same success under my arm pits (which is where I really would have liked to have seen the biggest difference) but that's most likely due to finding it so difficult to place to the wand correctly.
Now about that price tag - regardless of the results I have seen, I cannot justify the price tag; I'm sure if the system does as it claims it will save a fortune in razors, removal lotions and salon visits over time...but even so, for that much money I'd want to see permanent results, a lot faster.
