Fun and easy to learn, and it teaches European geography too! 24 Jan 2011

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I've been a big fan of train board games like the Ticket to Ride series for years, and then a friend introduced me to Transeuropa, describing it as "a faster train game that you can learn in a few minutes". She was right - it took about 2 minutes for the rules to be crystal clear, and the setup takes only a moment. Each player gets a set of 5 city cards from 5 regions of Europe, and must take turns building train tracks, trying to be the first to connect their set of cities by rail. The difference from games like Ticket to Ride is that the rails are NOT exclusive to one player - you can connect into the bigger network being added to by other players - but there are geographic penalties such as mountains/bodies of water that make crossing more difficulty for certain parts of the board. Scoring happens when one player gets all their cities connected, and then other players lose points based on how many lengths of track they still needed to finish connecting their own cities.

This game has a few great points: it teaches a nice broad overview of European geography to give players a sense of where various countries/cities are located; it doesn't feel like any one player is beating the pants off the others while you play; and even when you're losing you still enjoy the process of racing to get your train lines onto the central tracks others have built for you. I love transportation games (Ticket to Ride, Metro, Thurn & Taxis) but each is different, and this is a great addition to the collection!

Fun game but a bit lopsided... 14 July 2008

I've been on a board game binge for a little while now and happened upon this at some point. I'm a fan of train games (loved Sid Meier's Railroads series...before the recent one, I mean) and this looked to be something that could satisfy my urge to build train lines.

Overall, the game is fast-paced and you can whip through a two-player game in 15-20 minutes. You lay down track pieces to connect a collection of cities you draw at the start of the game. The first person to connect all their cities ends the game and the losing players lose points for every track they don't lay to connect their respective cities.

The main issue I have with the game, and I think others have mentioned it, is that if you luck out with the cities you draw, you have a significant advantage over a player that draws cities that are just a bit more out of the way than others. This combined with the fact that you can piggyback on other players' networks to reach destinations means you could connect to a player's network and finish the game in no time. It IS part of the strategy but it shortens the game a bit.

So, while this is a fun little short game when you want some fast-paced game play, if you're looking for something more sophisticated and involving, I suggest Ticket to Ride. And, if you can, get the expansion, Ticket to Ride - USA 1910 Expansion DOW 7216, since it gives you playing card sized cards over the miniature ones that come with the original game.

Great game - it makes you think - something most of us humans need to do more of. Says ages 8+, but my great nephew of 7 enjoys this games and can beat most of us adults. Same rules as TransAmerica, but a good teaching tool for familarization of Europe's geography. I have played the game with 2 people and with 6 people - a challenge both times. I highly recommed this game for people who like to think, stratigize and have fun all at the same time.
