Please note that is an expansion to the original Carcassone and cannot be played as a game by itself!!!
While in Carcassone you can claim land, roads, cities and monasteries by placing your characters on the tiles, with the Tower you can claim even more: your opponents' characters. By building towers you can take your opponents' characters hostage and keep them until they take one of your own prisoner and arrange an exchange. The higher the tower the further your hands can wander to imprison your opponents' players.
This leads to changes in tactics and to higher risks in comparison to the original game:
* you will not want to place a character where it stands in danger of being captured. Therefore you will have to forego items to build.
* if you character is taken hostage you will make it your business to take one of your opponents' hostage so you can retrieve your own character
* items your are in the process of building are even less secure, eg. if your character is taken hostage from a piece of land you're building and expanding all can be lost if that particular character is taken hostage.
This makes the game meaner and calls for harsher tactics as the stakes go up. This makes it even more fun. I do feel that playing with the Tower is not so much fun if there are just two of you, as you might end up just going back and forth taking each other hostage. From 4 up the Tower will really have on effect on the course of the game, without focussing solely on hostage taking.

Firstly, we love Carcassonne, it is really a fantastic game and if you haven't bought the main game yet, do so you will not be disappointed. We also have various expansions to the game such as Inns and Cathedrals, Builders & Traders and Towers.
The other expansions complement the main basis of the game perfectly and are therefore highly recommended. However, Towers, for me, is different in that the tactics that must be employed become quite significantly altered (as are well described elsewhere in other reviews), to such an extent that it severely upsets the game. We have played the game with this expansion several times with the hope and belief that over time, as we become more used to it, our tactics will develop, but to be frank we have now decided to abandon using this expansion, other than the extra tiles and the cardboard tower that come with the set and revert to the basic game plus the other expansion sets.

We are keen Carcassonne players and have enojoyed the friendly social aspects of the game and have enjoyed a number of extensions......HOWEVER; This expansion changes the game dynamic incredibly. For us the game turned much more agressive in trying to take other players' pieces and found that you could be nicely building up a city and someone comes along and undoes all your hard work by putting a tower alongside you. The game becomes less enjoyable, and in our case, lower scoring. We'll stick with it but much prefer the other expansions we have. We may end up just using the tiles without the tower blocks.
Apart from that, it's handy to have a tile stacker in the form of a card tower.
In my opinion, make this your final consideration in Carcassonne when you have acquired all the other possible expansions.
