A classic tale of self-discovery, romance, and adventure, Rio is the story of Blu, a flightless macaw who was taken from the forests of Rio de Janeiro as a young bird and raised by a kind girl in a small Minnesota town. When an ornithologist comes to town and informs Blu's now-grown owner Linda that Blu is the last male of his species, Blu and Linda return to Rio so that Blu can mate with a feisty female named Jewel. Thus begins an adventure in which Blu encounters everything from the complexities of courtship and love, to thugs involved in an exotic animal theft ring, strange new friendships--including one with an overly friendly slobbering bulldog--and a crazy ride through a carnival parade. Blu and Linda both mature as a result of their journey in Rio, and love ensures that life will never be quite the same for either ever again. The animation in Rio is quite impressive, the characters are endearing, the Brazilian music is very appealing, and the star-studded voice cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Will.i.am, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, George Lopez and Jamie Foxx. While the story doesn't really offer anything new--instead playing much like a rehashing of some of the major plot points from movies like Madagascar, Finding Nemo and Babe--that doesn't mean the film isn't perfectly entertaining for both kids and adults. Format:DVD
I was expecting nothing when i saw this and was swept away right from the opening scene. Colourful and happy, full of cool latin music, a good sense of humour and loads of heart. The plight of a rare blue macaw becomes an adventure full of exciting scenes, well crafted animation full of sweeping shots in great looking locations. This is an all rounder, an exotic ride.
Rio has some quality characters, and plenty of quirky, unexpected moments, tons of fun and the right touch of romance. It's satisfying for adults and kids alike. Feels much fuller and more engaging than the Ice Age films.
It's combination of colour, music and a vibrant South America reminds me of old Disney classics (such as Three Caballeros) but it's well balanced with modern humour and pace.
There's been some fine animated/kids films this year - Legend of the guardians (beautiful detail), Narnia 3 voyage of the dawntreader (an underrated and gorgeous looking, old fashioned adventure) but fresh out of the clear blue skies comes this little gem.
For a family film, after the sunday dinner etc - it doesn't get much better than this. Highly recommended.

WORD OF CAUTION. Having received my Rio blu-ray this morning I played it straight away on my PS3 and the picture kept freezing. Having cleaned the disc several times the problem persisted, and after researching on the internet, the same problem occurred in America. The fault is with the movie transfer onto the disc causing problems with playback occasionally.
Problems aside, this is the best animated film not to come out of Disney/Pixar since Shrek 2. Fun for all ages, the picture is perfect and the sound is amazing, well worth a purchase. Hopefully Fox will fix the problem with the discs and make this a 5 star item, but with the playback problems 1 star is taken away

If you have a PS3 or indeed any other player that is connected to the internet do not buy this disk. Fox have made an error in the production of the disk (even thought they will not admit it) which means that the disk hunts for info from the internet if the player is connected to the internet. The result of this is that the film stutters on a regular basis thus making it impossible to watch.
Having now got the film in 3D I would give the film itself a 5 out of 5 but this disk should not be for sale & if Fox had any sense they would have taken it off the shelf as soon as they new about the problem. In future if I buy a Fox film I will do a lot of research before buying it and of course I will only do this if it is a must have film, so Fox will not be getting much of my business.
By the way if you have got one of these disks it can be used on a PS3 by disconnecting it from the internet. But you shouldn't have to do this to play a disk.
