Product Description

Product Description

In 2001, Rinko Kawauchi launched her career with the simultaneous publication of three astonishing photobooksUtatane, Hanabi, and Hanakofirmly establishing her as one of the most innovative newcomers to contemporary photography, not just in Japan, but across the globe. In the years that followed, she published other notable monographs, including Aila (2004), The Eyes, the Ears (2005), and Semear (2007). And now, ten years after her precipitous entry onto the international stage, Aperture is delighted to publish Illuminance, the latest volume of Kawauchis work and the first to be published outside of Japan. Kawauchis work has frequently been lauded for its nuanced palette and offhand compositional mastery, as well as her ability to incite wonder via careful attention to tiny gestures and the incidental details of her everyday environment. In Illuminance, Kawauchi continues her exploration of the extraordinary in the mundane, drawn to the fundamental cycles of life and the seemingly inadvertent, fractal-like organization of the natural world into formal patterns. This impressive compilation of previously unpublished images is proof of Kawauchis unparalleled, unique sensibility and her on-going appeal to the lovers of photography.

Rinko Kawauchi 9 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Beautiful works but the print could be better. The double pages with single image does not disguise the fact that the inking is not as good as it could be. Shame really as it would really benefit from being top quality all the way through the process of production. Love her work!

Freewheeling vision 25 July 2011
By Geoffrey P. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This lovely book is another Aperture production of excellence, and reminds us that photography is a vision thing. No theme, other than attention paid to living things and their individual plights as well as the beautiful details we all live with but mostly overlook. Wonderful, imaginative use of a vintage camera (Rolleiflex) and good old film. The image is everything....kudos to the photograoher and Aperture.

This is such a magical, and whimsical book. It has a childlike innocence that makes you see the world in a new way. It's printed incredibly well and I highly recommend it!
Beautiful book for beautiful photos 11 April 2012
By Esther Lin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The presentation is amazing, the paper, the print -- everything comes together so well in this Kawauchi book that I felt full of emotion as I turned each page. My face actually grew tired of emoting, loving each image.
