    Product Description

The rings strike without warning, showing up on the face and throat like the fingerprints of God. Extremely contagious, only fire stops them from spreading to others. The infected person? Pushed into a Cleansing Station and purified by flame.

Inigo is walking home with his friend when he sees the rings pop-up on Claude's neck. He doesn't hesitate. Claude begs for his life but what can be done? Inigo knows the only treatment.

Unfortunately, in this new world ravaged by plague, fire can't purify the haunting memories away or ensure a safe and peaceful future.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Loved This Story But It Was Super Short! Like 15 Pages??? 10 Feb 2011

I really struggled with what rating to give this story.
For the Story Quality (for the short time I was reading) 5 stars!
    For the Characters 5 stars!
    The Premise 5 stars!

I loved this story about a civilization that sacrifices so much for the greater good. The premise was very interesting. I was left with so many questions! It was very unsatisfying. I mean dang. I know it was a short story. I just did not know HOW SHORT!!! I mean just when you are getting into the story. Blam... It is over. I swear it was 15 pages on my kindle. What happens to the people if the rings can become full blown? How did this epidemic begin? How does it end? Why are there no guns at the suicide stations? Why did the main character make a run for it with his daughter? What was so bad about this disease that made it so easy for people to make the choices that were made?

This author has some serious talent! Just next time put some meat on it!!
4.0 out of 5 stars Very short, very creepy... 27 Jan 2012

As other reviewers have pointed out, this is a very short story, and it will take most readers only a few minutes to get through. A little more length and deeper characterization would have been nice, but I'm not complaining, as something was gained by keeping "Rings" short and simple. I'm not a huge fan of zombie stories, but this one goes to the very heart of the genre. It's very effective, even a bit wrenching, and I'm sure glad I didn't read it just before bedtime!
3.0 out of 5 stars I, too, struggled to rate... 20 Jan 2012

    Pace of the story: 4
    Creativity of the content: 3
    Completeness of thoughts/rationale: 2
Length: 2, for content and context offered
    Interesting: 4

I think that this short story, even as a short, could have been a little more complex. It seemed far too simple to me, the conclusions that the protagonist drew....yes, way too simple.

I would have preferred to be seduced by the story a little more, rather than just given everything on a platter. The obvious conclusion early on was that the protagonist was going to lose the only thing he had left: his daughter.

It would have been nice to know the man's religion (a lot of references to praying), etc.

That being said, I did enjoy the story, which is the biggest reason it recieved a three!

For a free story, it was a steal of a deal.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Mercilessly Quick Tale of Dads and Disease 22 Jan 2011

The story is only long enough to begin to create an attachment to the main characters, only to have it abruptly end.
The sum of this reader's take is a desire for more of this setting, and sad feelings.
