The fifth album from Welsh pop prodigies Super Furry Animals, Rings Around the World is their most staggeringly ambitious work to date. Featuring everything from Status Quo-style boogie-rockers to technofied drill & bass meltdowns--and even, on the DVD version, 12 specially commissioned film shorts rendered in dizzying surround sound--this is an immaculately conceived pop masterpiece with far more in common with the excitable genre-crushing of 1999's "Guerrilla" than their previous album, the very respectable but defiantly firework-less Welsh-language folk outing Mwng. One of the greatest joys is that while the lyrics are imbued throughout with a sense of dippy fun, closer inspection reveals a satisfyingly off-kilter --and frequently inspirational--intelligence. The gorgeous "Presidential Suite"--which, incidentally, features John Cale tickling the ivories--marries the classic SFA psychedelic shimmer to a weary lyric concerning the Monica Lewinsky scandal that rocked the Clinton presidency, frontman Gruff Rhys questioning it sadly like it's the most passé thing he can comprehend. Perhaps that's so: when you're playing with the sort of magic that's scattered liberally over Rings Around the World, even the salacious exploits of world leaders pale into tedium. --Louis Pattison

Superb.,

This album is the first I've heard from the Furries and to be honest, I need not hear any more. It can't get any better. A happy-slappy mix of all genres of music makes this album one the best for a long time. Stretching from the bass-filled Rings Around The World to the magnificent, if not bizarre, ending to No Sympathy, the sarcasm and apathetic look at life around these Welsh Wonders make this an album well worth at least several listenings.

Although I'm wrting this review almost a year after its release,"Rings Around The World" was one of the most ambitious and creative albums of 2001(which was a very good music year too!). Unlike their earlier albums, this a slower,more thoughtful look at the modern world with a widescreen sound and some superb harmonizing from Bunf,Cian and Gruff. No songs sound out of place in a seamless collection of tunes.SFA are the most prolific group in the Uk and this is easily their best LP since Radiator.

Differant, but fantastic,

Having never bought any Super Furry's albums before, I bought this one with a great deal of thought, as usually it takes me a while to break into differant styles of music. And the furrys have their own individual style. On first listen, I was still a little unsure, until the album got to Run Christian Run, that is. This song is an incredible opus, composed with swirling guitars and vocals, and (if you own the special DvD edition of the album) a thought provocing and opinionated promo video. Its an incredible song, and it makes you go back and listen to all the other tracks and realise how fantastic they are too. Juxtaposed with you, Presidential Suite, Rings Around the World, they are all worthy of a single release. There arent really any weak songs on this album, but then again if you are expecting belting prog rock anthems aka Muse, dont bother. This albums beauty is the way it draws the listener in and makes them think and feel the lyrics and melody. A stunning effort.
