How do you build a narrative for a story as rich and multifaceted as the life of Joan Baez? Baez herself is not especially inclined to introspection, or to the backwards glance. Often wrongly perceived as a naïve idealist, she is, in her own distinctive way, a pragmatist to the core with her eyes fixed squarely on what’s right in front of her. As an activist, she has viewed her life ... Read more in Amazon's Joan Baez Store

More than a decade has now passed since April 1995, when Joan Baez and her guests took over the Bottom Line cabaret in the heart of New York's Greenwich Village for the recording of Ring Them Bells, a watershed event in post-modern folk music. This is an expanded edition double-CD: 90 minutes vs. the original single CD's 64 minutes. The original's 15 tracks have now been upped to 21 tracks the additional six of which are previously unreleased more accurately reflecting the sequence of the recording over the course of two nights, with two sets each night. Added in are three additional performances by Joan (Love Song To A Stranger, Geordie, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere), a second duet with Tish Hinojosa (Gracias A La Vida), a second duet with Indigo Girls (The Water Is Wide), and a second duet with Mary Chapin Carpenter (Stones In The Road). Disc One: The Lily Of The West / Love Song To A Stranger / Sweet Sir Galahad / And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda / Willie Moore (with Kate and Anna McGarrigle) / Swallow Song (with Mimi Farina) / Don't Make Promises / Jesse (with Janis Ian) / Ring Them Bells (with Mary Black) / Welcome Me. Disc Two: Geordie / You Ain't Goin' Nowhere / Suzanne / You're Aging Well (with Dar Williams) / Pajarillo Barranqueno (with Tish Hinojosa) / Gracias A La Vida (with Tish Hinojosa) / The Water Is Wide (with Indigo Girls) / Don't Think Twice It's Alright (with Indigo Girls) / Stones In The Road (with Mary Chapin Carpenter) / Diamonds & Rust (with Mary Chapin Carpenter) / The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

2CD Inc. 16-Page Booklet /Previously Unreleased Tracks
This recording when first released in single CD format was at a time when Joan Baez was releasing more live albums plus moving around labels a lot. Overall it was fine but not outstanding Baez, featuring the highlights of two evenings hosted by Joan with several songs being sung with other guest artistes. The performances were from a famous NY folk venue (the Bottom Line) which subsequently closed as did the original record label of release!
Now re-released on the UK folk label of choice (Proper), the addition of a number of previously omitted recordings expands the set out to two CDs and makes it available as a Collectors edition. While nice to have a more complete picture of the two nights, sadly none of the new tracks alter the original view of the first release as good but not great. Baez's voice remains the main reason for acquiring, and I found her solos still the better recordings versus the shared performances, including one with her sister Mimi Farina who has since died and to whom the new release is dedicated.
Having just seen Baez live on her UK tour, this compilation includes several that she performed, and other classics. Good live atmosphere with Baez's incomparable voice coming through clearly. Very good value! i recommend it.
I had this on an audio tape but when I found it was available on CD thought it a better deal. Don't go a bundle on every single song but it's a nice thing to have. Particularly like 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda',a long time favorite of mine so it's nice to have that and' Willie Moore' with the lateKate McGarrigle and her sister.
