Product Description

"Ring of Truth" is the uplifting autobiography of Geraldine Bridgewater, the first woman to trade on the London Metal Exchange. From lowly beginnings as a telex operator and general assistant, she rose to the dizzy heights of dealing in the famous 'Metal Ring' at London's Stock Exchange. Although she broke with convention by becoming one of the very few female traders of the 1970s, did very well for herself in this definitive 'man's world' and witnessed the advent of such modernisations as the shift from manual to computerised trading, she also suffered extreme stress and a 'loss of soul' in the City's soulless, money-orientated environment. This book is the dramatic story of how she broke into that world, thrived in it, yet ultimately decided to trade it in for a more satisfying and nurturing lifestyle.

About the Author

Geraldine Bridgewater worked in the City of London for nearly twenty years starting as a telex operator before becoming authorised to trade in the ring as the first Woman Dealer on the London Metal Exchange. Her struggle to achieve equality and become a trader during the 70's and 80's was recorded in the press and Radio. Newspaper and magazine articles followed her steps from lowly beginnings to the peak of success in an openly hostile environment that was proud to call itself 'A male dominated bastion'.In 1983 Geraldine was granted the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of her achievements and went on to become Head of Public Affairs and Training for the newly formed Association of Futures Brokers and Dealers.By 1987 greener pastures beckoned and Geraldine moved to Exmoor where she developed her interests in Archaeology, Painting and Organic Farming. After a short break Geraldine resumed her career in Public Relations for the Health Service before taking up a post as Sustainable Development Co-ordinator for West Somerset District Council.

Truth as Gerry saw it 21 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
Beautifully written, vivid illustrations of the City; large buildings, impressive entrances, wealth, 'my word is my bond', public school entrants from Eton and Cambridge, Harrow and Oxford ... following their fathers' footsteps, traders, telex operators and all those wanting to 'getting on in the world'.

This book made me realise the importance of discipline, ritual and perseverance. "Ring of Truth" is a must for those who believe in Life, Liberty and Property. This book is about a journey of ambition and dreams coming true. The awesome experience of the first female trader and Freedom of the City of London 1983, in her own words.

I enjoyed reading Gerry meeting Margaret Thatcher who had just become opposition leader and the only surviving suffragette at a party held by James Callaghan, Prime Minister at Number 10 Downing Sreet to celebrate fifty years of women's right to vote.

Gerry worked to become the first ever woman on the London metal exchange, which was very hard at the time it being a male dominated industry just after the equal rights act had come about. Her descriptions of the city are very detailed and have a magical quality. Her memories of how she was treated are shocking to a modern woman, making us think about how lucky we are thanks to people like Gerry. An educational read but with lots of moments that make you laugh.

I really enjoyed Gerry's story and learned a lot from it. It's warm and heartfelt and also quite funny! This is the kind of book that I wish I could have read as a young woman, growing up because it tells a compelling story but also how in the end integrity and perseverance triumph above all odds.
This was the first woman trader in the London Metal Exchange but she was probably the first to write what impact the City can have in developing countries, and how trading is not just about 'gambling' and making money, but how important it is to appreciate honesty and trust. I did not know anything about what it's like to work in the stock markets and I found the book really interesting and illuminating about what really happens inside these places.
The book highlights the incredible stories of the City of London's past and it really made me feel proud of living here: the next thing I'm going to do is visit these amazing locations in the City. Thank you Gerry!
