Anita Ward belongs to that select band of artists whose only UK chart entry made #1. In her case, 'Ring My Bell', with its distinctive syndrum, has proved an almost impossible act to follow, although there would surely have been some consolation in the fact that the single also topped the American charts (both the pop and R&B versions) and made the top five in almost every other country that has a regular chart. What makes the story all the more unique is that the song, written by producer Frederick Knight, was not intended for Anita at all but for Stacy Lattishaw, and Anita, who hated the song, only recorded it because Frederick insisted that her debut album needed one more dance number!

Anita Ward is kind of special to me. I have never met her, but she went to school and was good friends with my first cousin, Pat, when she attended Rust College in the 1970's. Anita was very popular in school and on campus, and everyone knew who she was. Take a look at Rust College yearbook just to see how photogenic she is. . .

Having said that, this album is only for completist. It is not the original album that had the #1 hit, Ring My Bell. Anita's first album was entitled SONGS OF LOVE. Comprised mostly of love ballads and up-tempo cuts, it's an enjoyable and easy listening album. Strangely the label never released a follow-up single. Her second album, SWEET SURRENDER, produced the minor hit and chart entry, "Don't Drop My Love". Anita had sporadic recordings throughout the 80's and that's what you get on this compilation put together by one of her producers. These songs are in the disco reign and are from her rare album, WHEREVER THERE IS LOVE. I think using a photo outake from her Songs Of Love sessions and changing the name of the album to RING MY BELL is a cheap way of tricking customers to buy this product. The material on this cd is interesting though as it takes Anita in a different direction. Still, I prefer her SWEET SURRENDER material more. The RING MY BELL cd does feature a new spin/sound on "Ring My Bell," so for that alone it might be worth the money to get.
