My first impression on taking this charger out its box was that its plastic body looked quite fragile and certainly not as robust as my other charger which has an aluminium casing. The crocodile clips are not the quality I expected for a charger of this price range, they are adequate, but the jaws do not open wide enough to easily connect them whilst the battery is still in the vehicle.

The RSC516 is NOT IP65 Weatherproof as stated on this and some other websites and is "for indoor use only", it's only the smaller "Maintenance" chargers in the range which have weather protection.

After a poor introduction you may be relieved to know that it actually does its job of charging batteries rather well! It fully charged my completely dead 90ah battery in approximately 6 hours and topped up several leisure batteries in no time at all. The diagnostic features are useful, and were the reason I chose to try this in the first place.

I must say that if I had paid the full recommended retail price for this I would be sorely disappointed as the components feel and look flimsy, it's a pity that Ring don't fit quality terminal clamps as it would do wonders to the overall feel of the product.

Update: The Charger died after 40 days ownership, checked the fuse, it was OK. Returned charger to Amazon.

Unfortunately, the first unit failed after one day's use, it was completely dead. The cooling fan on the replacement unit started squealing after approximately 3 days use, so this was also returned. The weight (3 kilos with packaging) meant the return charge, recorded delivery was over £11 each time. I cannot recommend this charger for unattended use. When working it did the job, but the cooling fan runs flat out until the maintainance charge rate is reached (approx 18 hours on a slightly low battery) and is very noisy - impossible to use overnight if trying to sleep anywhere near the charger.

and its a very clever charger too. Its automated seven stage programme has successfully diagnosed all my batteries, lamp, cars, and marine, and it has succeeded in bumping up an older car battery back to life, with the best charge it ever had. You can pick the various charging voltages to force the battery to accept the charge, (careful not to blow the battery). I have not got the initial sharp charge to breakup sulphate crystals to work yet. It also is light, and has an interesting hanging hook, to hang on the wall whilst charging.

Arrived as promised - very simple and I only just learnt that a smart charger existed - I have an old car that I use at the weekends and I just leave it on all the the time and fires up the car like new every time! Love it

I bought the 12 amp version from Halfords and was immediately impressed with it. I connected to the car through a Caravan 12S plug and it did exactly what the manufacturer claimed. It fully charged the battery and then stated it was 'FUL' I check it every morning and after a cold night it will show a charge of 0.1 or 0.2 amps, until it is again 'FUL'.
When the 16 amp version came up on Amazon for less than half price I bought it without hesitation. This should work the same at the 12 amp version, however when it has fully charged the battery it seems to go to sleep & forgets about 'top ups'. Switch it off and than back on & it then charges at say 1.5 amps slowly dropping over a few hours till it falls asleep again!

really poor charger, low quality and they do break. Had mine just over a year when it stopped working, seemed ok but went straight into desulfation mode and wouldnt charge anything. Called Ring and they couldnt have been less helpful, guess they get quite a few returned as faulty. Buy a CTEK charger as i eventually did far better quality.

Well, what should I say. In my opinion it is the best charger for the money. I had 7year old Energizer battery left in the garage and I was going to chuck it away, lucky enough this charger came accross and I did desulphation (manual reconditioning) program using RSC516 battery charger. Guys belive me or not this charger reconditioned old Energizer battery to 90% of life (that is what the display says, got to test the battery for long period of time to proove it). This charger has got built in fan, which kicks in straight away when you plug the charger in to electric socket. Wires are long enough and Honestly saying the battery clamps are not that small as previous reviewer said... Built in LED light was helpful in dark garage as well.

It would be really helpful if it will come with some decent plastic storage box - say for example something like cordless drills do come, cos it is quite hard to put it back in to the plastic packaging...

Other than that Iam very very happy with it. Thank you Amazon ;)

Well - basically it has proved useless, for two obvious and fatal flaws.

The biggest is that it does not work on a completely flat battery. So the one time I really needed it to work, it did nothing whatsoever and I had to borrow a neighbours charger. Insane that a product at this price has no function to override its smart charging, for a flat battery.

The other is the useless clips. My battery connections are pretty standard (Ford) - but the useless clips do not attach to them. I have to precariously fasten them to the nuts, and hope they do not come off. They are also on very short wires, and as the unit is NOT weatherproof, you either have to not use it in the rain, or improvise. Longer leads and you could put it inside the car.

I should also add - the instruction manual is completely useless. I ended up emailing Ring, to ask about how the battery recondition worked - they just said 'its automatic'.

Very very disappointed indeed. Do NOT buy this product.
