Book Description

1 Feb 2012
"From the moment in 1918 when Corporal Lee Duncan discovers Rin Tin Tin on a World War I battlefield, he recognizes something in the pup that he needs to share with the world. Rin Tin Tin's improbable introduction to Hollywood leads to the dog's first blockbuster film and over time, the many radio programs, movies, and television shows that follow. The canine hero's legacy is cemented by Duncan and a small group of others who devote their lives to keeping him and his descendants alive. At its heart, Rin Tin Tin is a poignant exploration of the enduring bond between humans and animals. But it is also a richly textured history of twentieth-century entertainment and entrepreneurship and the changing role of dogs in the American family and society. Almost ten years in the making, Susan Orlean's first original book since The Orchid Thief is a tour de force of history, human interest, and masterful storytelling - the ultimate must-read for anyone who loves great dogs or great yarns."

Review

`A remarkable book... A wonderfully entertaining account of one of the strangest partnerships in a very strange milieu' --John Banville, Guardian

`Glorious... Fun, engaging, passionate and mercifully unsentimental, Rin Tin Tin is the very best kind of narrative non-fiction. One hundred per cent pure reading bliss.' --Melanie McGrath, Evening Standard

`Fascinating... It is not only a story of fame, money and dogs, but also an engagingly written meditation on the things that survive us through singular obsession'
--Sunday Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book of the year so far 25 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The only bad thing about this book is that it eventually had to end - I would have been happy to go on reading (and may just start at the beginning again).

Ms Orlean has a very easy to read writing style, taking you along with her almost as if you were her companion, walking by her side and seeing the things she sees.

There are fascinating facts about the various facets of Rin Tin Tin's career, but we also follow the author's research and her own background involvement with the legend.

I was prepared to read it anyway - no matter how bad, because of my love of the 1950's TV series, but this stands on it's own as a truly great book which anyone could enjoy.

Please give it a try - I'm certainly going to buy some of the other books Susan Orlean has written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative. 11 Dec 2012

The author takes you through her adventures of her thorough research in finding everything she could find on Rin Tin Tin. I've learned a lot. Not only about Rin Tin Tin, but also about the film industry and other dogs in movies back in the 1920's and 1930's all the way through present time of Rinty's lineage. If you have any interest in dogs in films, this is one to read, although it does focus on Rinty, you'll find some basic info on some of the other dog stars.

I found this book to be a very boring dull read and regret spending any money purchasing it. In fact I would not read it even if it was free.
