a marvelous bargain 4 Feb 2013
By Stanley Crowe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I hadn't heard Scheherazade since the days of vinyl, and when I upgraded my collection about 30 years ago, it got overlooked. This came along cheap at my local store, and I grabbed it. It's an original 1993 DG coupling in good, warm digital sound, and it sounds marvelous. The piece itself is much better than I remembered: a simply gorgeous orchestral suite of four movements, each about 10 minutes, give or take. The orchestration and the melodic invention are first-rate, and Rimsky-Korsakov has a fine sense of when not to let a good thing linger too long. Since orchestral texture is important to the enjoyability of the piece, good sound is essential, and the sound that the DG engineers give Chung and the Bastille Opera Orchestra is spectacularly clear and warm. Rimsky was also savvy enough to make each 10-minute section varied in its inner structure, so the gorgeous stuff never becomes cloying. I particularly liked the quality of the string playing in the third section -- really great, in great sound -- and the melodic material at the opening of the second resembles two variations on "The Star of the County Down." Obviously, it can't really be that, but it sounds that lovely. The stormy moments are powerfully driven home, the tender moments are lovely, and the violin soloist -- the orchestra's concertmaster, I assume -- who represents the voice of Scheherazade plays beautifully.

The coupling is an account of the 1919 Firebird Suite by Stravinsky. The music by no means puts Rimsky in the shade. It's lovely stuff, though, and again the DG sound is wonderfully spacious. Comparing this with Abbado's fine 1972 analogue version is instructive -- the warmer modern sound is to be preferred, just as sound. There must be dozens of Firebird Suites and Scheherazades in the catalogue, but if you're on the lookout for these, this coupling nicely fills the bill, for low price and high quality

GREAT EXOTIC RUSSIAN CLASSICS! 12 Feb 2013
By Mark Hancock - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a re-issue of the DG CD featuring the Orchestre de l'Opera Bastille conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. Same product, only cheaper! What I like about this CD, in addition to the price, the musicianship and sound (all of which are excellent), is the pairing. It makes sense on a number of levels: Stravinsky was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov, both composers were Russian and both pieces are exotic, tonal and lush (it's early Stravinsky after all), with middle-eastern/asiatic settings. To me, this works far better than a more typical, but jarring pairing of Scheherezade with either Capriccio Espagnol, or Russian Easter Overture. This CD is exotic, enchanting and lovely to listen to from beginning to end, with a little adrenaline rush on the way; love that Infernal Dance of King Kashchei! It's like a trip south from Moscow on a trade route.
