Product Description

Although he was counted amongst Mily Balakirev's 'Mighty Handful' (which dedicated itself to pursuing a more purely Russian art music, as opposed to the Austro-German musical dominance of the era), both works on this recording show how Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was able to draw influences from beyond Russia into his own unique compositional approach: the scenes from his opera 'The Invisible City of Kitezh' take on a dramatic, Wagnerian influence, whilst 'Sheherazade' is suffused with orientalism as it conjures images from the Thousand and One Nights.

Format: Audio CD
Beware this is a live recording. It should be stated on the front cover. Furthermore, because it is a free recording, the CD should be budget priced. I presume the whole series is live, so it should all be budget priced. The recording is rather subdued ie not as bright as a studio one would be, and the percussion sounds recessed. Only in the shipwreck movement does the percussion come to the fore. Only the woodwinds are clear. In the quiet passages the audience is clearly audible. Performance-wise, very expressive in the Temirkanov fashion, first movement is darker and more brooding than most. In the 90s RCA recording with the NYPO Temirkanov adopts a very lazy speed for the second theme in the 3rd movement, too slow I feel, which was the only thing wrong with that one. Here he is much faster, and to better effect. The Kitezh fillers are very good, although the Jarvi Chandos recording has 4 pieces (but it is 16-bit) - here there are only 3. But Kitezh excerpts are hard to find. Buy for the enjoyment of the performance, the orchestra is first-rate (flautist could be better), but there are better quality studio recordings.

Exotic 28 April 2013
By Jerry of San Francisco - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I had not heard of The Invisible City of Kitezh till recently. This is exotic music worth adding to one's collection.

I sold all of my vinyl records a few years ago and no longer had Scheherazade, so I was pleased to have it included in this album. This interpretation is quite nice. The playing gives me a new perspective on the music. The recording is done very well.
