Reviews

Wildly bloody and violent prison-set action film based on the Japanese manga strip Riki-Oh. When young Riki-Oh (Sui-Wong Fan) is sentenced to 20 years in jail for manslaughter, the ruthless opium-running gangsters who control the prison get more than they bargained for. On entering the prison, Ricky witnesses the guards assaulting an old man who later hangs himself in despair, and Ricky vows to avenge his death. Blood, guts and every other body part you can think of proceed to fly about the screen as Ricky takes his brutal and gruesome revenge.

Ridiculous. Over-the-top. Hilarious. Demented. Do any of these words really do justice to this brilliant but quite insane film? Probably not. But make no mistake. `Story of Ricky' may have been filmed on a miniscule budget and with virtually no concessions at all to realism or even consistency, but it is 87 minutes of pure, undiluted entertainment of the highest order and about as much fun as movies get. It also makes Jackie Chan's `City Hunter' look like the work of Ingmar Bergman by comparison!

Fan Siu-wong is Riki Ho (or Ricky Oh), imprisoned for slaying the sleazy drug-dealer who caused the death of Ricky's girlfriend. Once he's incarcerated, Ricky finds himself dealing with those old prison film mainstays: bullying inmates, corrupt authority figures and cell-block hard-men. But that brief synopsis, applicable to all too many undistinguished action films, doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of how crazy this flick is.

For starters, there's the violence. Exaggerated and super-gory don't even begin to cover it. Trained by his Uncle Ghost, Ricky is superhumanly strong to a cartoonish, comic-book degree (apt enough, given this film's basis in Japanese manga), and this leads to some magnificently mad conflicts. Holes are punched in stomachs, fists are disintegrated, eyeballs go flying and are eaten by birds, heads are thumped clean off, people are skinned alive, razorblades are consumed, and limbs are forced into meat-grinders. As other reviewers have observed, if this was remotely realistic, it'd be nightmarish. But while the cheap 'n' cheerful special effects are great fun, everything is so deliberately ludicrous that the whole hyper-kinetic spectacle is an unforgettable 'splatstick' joy.

And of course, there are the characters.

The movie opens with a police van arriving at a prison with a fresh consignment of prisoners. It's probably not a good sign either when the van pulls up and we see that the floor is blood stained.
The prison system has been privatised in 2001 and are now run as a franchised business.

Into this brutal environment, arrives Ricky (Fan Siu-wong). Sentenced for 10 years imprisonment for the crimes of manslaughter and assault.

He's also quite unpopular with metal detectors as he has 5 bullets lodged in his chest. Ricky's never had them removed as he's keeping them as souveniers.

The prison itself is split into four wings, one for each point of the compass. These wings are run by the Gang of Four. In charge of these is the assistant warden and (naturally) the most powerful individual is the warden himself.

Anyone expecting a typical Hong Kong action movie should really look elsewhere though, as this movie is something quite different. Based on a Japanese manga, Story of Ricky is probably one of the most gore filled Hong Kong movies going. In fact, the look of the movie has more in common with Japanese cinema.

Not even 10 minutes in and we witness a man getting hit in the face with a wood plane...bye bye nose.
Oh, and that scene happened in the prison wash room, so if you're asking how a prisoner got the plane in there then this isn't the movie for you.
If on the other hand, you're not after realism and just want an entertaining gore fest then you are gonna really enjoy this.

Also in this prison we meet a man called Mad Dragon who has been placed in isolation as he ate the wardens horse.

I'd heard many good things about this film then proceeded to waste an evening watching it. 'The Story of Ricky', or 'Ricky O' as it is also known, in all truth it isn't terrible, but it's not that far off. Some of the terribleness helps make for unintentional amusement, but overall this is pretty low grade, bargain bin nonsense. Not as violent as some would have you believe yet the odd scene does stand out for the cheaply done over-the-top gore.
Verdict? Watch the dubbed version for extra laughs when hungover and sofa bound and you'll probably raise half a smile and get past the annoying facial expressions, shonky direction, silly story and naff fights and special effects. This film isn't quite "so bad it's good" territory but more on the lines of "So bad, it's actually quite bad", albeit with the odd amusing saving grace. Forgettable, drunken, Sunday afternoon fodder at best.

This movie is perfect for a lads night in; Just invite some mates over for a few beers and watch the 'Story of ricky-oh'(with the dubbing for extra laughs). If you're like me and enjoy a blood & guts fest, this is essential for your DVD collection! Although If you have no sense of humor or hate the sight of blood avoid this film... it has to be seen to be believed! ...it actually does, I've tried explaining it to people and they just look at you weirdly.
