Richard (Rik) Atherton was born in 1949 at 136 Highbury Grove in Portsmouth. When he was five, his parents moved to the idyllic Sussex village of Westbourne. Rik studied as an engineer and gained a degree in Industrial Management at Southampton University. He has two grown-up children and three grandchildren, all of whom he is, justifiably, immensely proud of. It is his love for them that is Rik's driving force. He wants to leave them, and generations to come, an enduring legacy.
Rik is dyslexic, something he only recently became fully aware of. He had always believed that he just wasn't very good reading. This is not too much of a hindrance; it just takes him longer to proofread.
When he discovered voice-recognition software, he was off like a rocket: words just flowed onto the screen in front of him. Great: his output more than doubled. Lamentably, however, the words that appeared were not always what he intended to write. Consequently proofreading became a far more difficult task. (Please be understanding, and forgive the occasional faux pas, if you spit won.)
Rik retired from engineering at 55. In addition to engineering he has been an antique restorer and dealer, an insurance salesman, a judo coach, a firefighter for 23 years, a barman, a fruit picker, a toilet salesman, a lecturer in China (the country), and has run his own motorhome hire business. Besides China, he has worked extensively in India and many other exotic parts of the world.
Rik has a number of medals and trophies for his successes in judo competitions. His greatest achievement was in 1995, when he became the British Judo Kata Champion in the Juno Kata discipline, and silver medallist in the self-defence kata, Kimi-No-Kata with his sparing partner, Karen French. However, Rik will laughingly tell you that when it comes to self-defence; he can't half bloody run.
Rik now lives in Pagham, where - not overly well disguised - some of the action in his novels takes place. Readers marvel at the ingenuity of his plots and in the deviousness of his villains. Although Rik vehemently claims to be a perfectly law-abiding citizen - he has a criminal mind. But, then, that's why his plots and characterisations are so exceptional.
