BBC Review

The phenomenal rise of trance, in particular that permeating from Holland's hinterland, during the past few years, has not gone unnoticed. DJ magazine's recent readers poll of the world's top spinners gave trance a resounding thumbs up with the top three (Tiësto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren) all plying their trade with tracks derived from the genre.

At six in the list was the reveller from Rotterdam, Ferry Corsten. There's little disputing that, as a DJ, the one-time footballer from the seaport, is one of the best. But the transition from deck general to recording artist is never a given. For Right Of Way, thankfully the journey is as smooth and polished as the production on the 14-tracks that lie within.

Corsten's particular dalliance of dance is trance with an electro-edge and techno-twist. Typified by the current single, "Rock Your Body, Rock" - drawing on influences ranging from jarring guitars of The Clash through to Numan-esque synthlines; and continued on the grungy "Whatever!". His previous single sortie, the dirty in-ya-face, "Punk", surprised many as it dented the top ten without a glow-stick being cracked within a hundred yards.

His music builds more on the past sounds that BT and Hardfloor pioneered, then the current crop of trance producers. And while tracks like "Kyoto", "Star Traveller" and the title track, do ooze of Judge Jules "largin' it" on a Saturday night with the formulaic clichéd ethereal breakdowns and hands-in-the-air riffs.

However, it is cuts like "Holding On" that make Right Of Way highly palatable. Shelley Harland duets on the said slice of sublime electronica that reeks of Brian Transeau's "Embracing The Sunshine" as progressive, electro and techno genres merge to create musical clarity. While "It's Time" and "Show Your Style" (with the wordy rhymes of Birgit) perfectly updates an electro blueprint with a contemporary breaks feel.

Designed for short-term impact rather than longevity, granted this might not be to everyone's liking. I personally never thought I'd enjoy it, let alone press the repeat button. Don't make unfair preconceptions of an album designed exclusively for a glow-stick generation of gurning 'Crasher kids waving their arms in unison as they feel the rush. That would be an insult to Right Of Way. Fusing trademark crystalline electronica with oddball percussion, Ferry Corsten ploughs his unconventional furrow with considerable style. --Jack Smith

4.0 out of 5 stars *Almost* brilliant... 30 Dec 2003
By C. Strachan VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Ferry Corsten has undoubtedly changed his style somewhat, and it may throw some people off his side. But he has succeeded at what is arguably most important about an album; every track is solidly produced - no slips. This CD is basically typical electronic music from the Dutch master, broadly 'trance' with fairly strong 80's-electro influences.

While the highlights are, in my opinion, the clear-cut trance numbers, 'Sublime' and 'Sweet Sorrow', more experimental ballad-type electro tracks like 'Holding On' are still superbly produced and stand brilliantly into place. The recent "hits", 'Punk' and 'Rock Your Body, Rock' hold their place nicely, but thankfully Ferry hasn't piled anthems onto this album and has been more experimental. Tracks like 'Kyoto', 'Star Traveller' and 'Right of Way' are more devious, original pieces of electronica, while 'Whatever', 'It's Time' and 'Show Your Style' come across as more strongly 80's-electro style.

It's not quite what I expected from Corsten, and perhaps some more epic tracks would have probably made this more likeable, but generally he has done a good job. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars The original Trancemaster returns... 17 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD
...and what a wait it's been. This is the first album under Ferry Corsten's own name & it's a marked improvement on his last effort, "Together" - under his most famous guise, System F. That was only released in Japan and when you hear it, you can see why. It was a cheap, tacky load of rubbish and Ferry must have been paid a lot of money to make it otherwise i'd like to think that he wouldn't normally have bothered. "Right of way" is a return to form showing his distinctive style in variety of tracks on offer here. Whether it be trance, electro, it even gets a bit rocky in places. Bear in mind however that recent album releases by trance stalwarts Three Drives and newcomer-ish, Mirco de Govia, knock socks off this album but they are in a class of their own & Ferry certainly has some new competition doing the rounds. That said, "Right of way" is solid, extremely danceable & well produced. It includes the single "Punk", plus new single "Rock, body rock" (one of the strongest tracks) plus some System F sounding tracks like "Star traveller" & "Kyoto". I've only given it 3 stars because all it lacks really is a bit of originality. That said, i'm still a huge fan. The question remains though, has Ferry's best tunes come & gone now? judge for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Right of Way not to be missed! 12 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
What a fantastic album! Ferry takes you on a journey right from the start with a Sublime prelude which serves as an appetiser, whetting your appetite for another fine helping of perfected trance! This album has not left my cd player since it arrived!(although it is a 5cd changer!) The title track Right of way is a classic tune, one to be played with the volume right up!From punk it deviates to a wicked 80s style electronica, and winds down with some fantastic vocals from Shelley. So many great pieces and so many different moods! A must-have album for any Ferry Corsten fan!
