BBC Review

Oh, this album has all the ingredients of something many would love to hate: it's by an X Factor winner and it's in the style of Harry Connick Jr, Michael Buble, and all those Irish man-bands' tributes to Frank, Tony etc.

It's also taken over a year since Leon's first single to come up with, so many will be saying ''Leon who?''.

It's a brave move in the openly cynical world of the nationwide talent contest to expect those sitting on the sofa to remember one year's winner to the next, but it's paid off.

Looking rather older and sporting suspiciously photoshopped cheekbone chisels, the cheeky chappy's voice is also surprisingly mature and smooth as a baby's... He's surrounded by equally slick orchestration, which is light of touch and spaciously balanced.

Incredibly, given that most tracks are ballads, underpinned by piano with soaring violins, the album neatly avoids overblown territory, which must be credited to Jackson's vocal control, never over-singing.

Opener and first single Don't Call This Love is complete with chimes and full of force, though it's not certain that it's charismatic enough to knock Peter Kay's Winner's song off the top spot.

Creative is a sassy, rumba-rhythmed number where Leon soars above, hinting at his prowess in the boudoir, this is easily the most memorable original track here.

While the lyrics for Star Gazing may be rather saccharine - rhyming ''star gazing'' with ''amazing'', is a bit too much to take - the pace and structure, (along with all-important key change) makes it pretty special - which can be said about all the tracks here.

The production throughout is flawless, and it's almost impossible to find fault. The only gripe worth making is that it would be good to hear something more pared-down, in contrast to the strings, piano, off-beat drums formula which pervade the entire record.

A truly slick and accomplished debut. --Lucy Davies

CD Description

The wait is over. X Factor champion Leon Jackson finally unleashes his highly anticipated debut album. Right Now is a confident collection of superb contemporary pop songs, each of which beautifully showcases Leon’s smooth and rich vocal delivery. 19 year old Leon has since spent the last six months recording the album with A grade songwriters and producers such as Steve Robson (Take That, James Morrison) and Peter Gordeno (Seal), drawing influences from the worlds of both pop and jazz. Fans of Leon’s amazing performances on The X Factor won’t be disappointed. Stand out tracks on the album include the single "Don’t Call This Love" an emotive and heartfelt love song with lush strings and soaring harmonies, the soft and beautiful "Stargazing", the up tempo slick groove of the infectious "Creative", the mellow jazz-influenced "All In Good Time" and title track "Right Now", a dramatic and dynamic feel-good tune.

'Right Now' is Leon Jackson's debut album and it is very impressive. It's hard to believe that such a rich and mature-sounding vocal can come from a 19-year-old lad.

There's a good mix of jazz, soul and pop. Leon's vocal shines in each of the genres. 'Stargazing' (my favourite), 'Fingerprints' and 'Ordinary Days' are gentle pop songs, with an abundance of acoustic guitar and piano. 'Stargazing' is the stand-out of the three, in my opinion. The soaring chorus and key change near the end of the song give me goosebumps. A truly beautiful song, coupled with Leon's warm and emotive vocal.

'Could Do Better' is one of the stand-outs from the 'BIG' songs. It would make a fabulous theme tune for the next Bond movie!

'Creative' is due to be released as the next UK single soon. It is upbeat and insanely catchy... and gets stuck in your head after only one or two listens. Leon's vocal is rich and jazzy, and the song itself has a distinct Samba feel to it. Kind of like a Samba-ish, but jazzy Ricky Martin! This song will have you up and dancing every time you listen to it!

Moving on to song No.12 - 'Caledonia'. This is the best version I've ever heard of this song. Leon is proud of his Scottish heritage, and it really shows in his heartfelt and emotional vocal.

I could write so much more, but it would end up as a huge essay! These songs are all just so good. The combination of such good songs and Leon's superb warm and rich voice, makes this album exceptionally excellent! Time was spent on recording this album and it shows. It oozes class.

Five stars for the album

and

an extra five stars for the singer! The future is looking bright for this young Scottish lad. Apparently, there is already interest outside of the UK.

Very catchy, worth listening to at least once. I play it in my car all the time and all my family and friends sing along. There is nothing wrong with the music itself and apparently Leon did not get another record deal because he couldn't quite cut it during the live shows. He has a nice blues/jazz sound with is nice to listen to all the time and his CD is a mixture of both slow and up-beat songs. It is worth buying.

After the good but not great first single of Dont Call This Love I was wondering what to expect from the debut album from young Leon Jackson. A totally different singer to the previous winner of X Factor, Leona Lewis, but just as impressive and distinctive vocally, Leon has more in common with the great rat pack artists of yesteryear and for an untrained 19 year-old it is all the more impressive that he has recorded a first album of such distinction, maturity and perfect vocals. It is like a different person takes over when he sings from the shy, nervous youngster so unsure of himself when placed in front of an audience. Songs like the anthemic Stargazing written by Alan Chung, more usually to be found writing for Michael Buble', are immediately engraved in people's heads with the wonderful words and music so rare in many of today's songs. Coldplay would have sold their souls for this song. Then there is All In Good Time - a catchy singalong song which again seems like one of the old school classics but is in fact a brand new song written by Peter Gordeno who has had a hand in a number of the new songs on this debut album including the Jewel in the Crown of Creative, a fantastic ratpack style uptempo song lent a modern edge with a female backing that literally wont leave your head. Why this was never chosen as the first single from the album I will never know. A big mistake in my opinion. The song Could Do Better wouldnt look out of place on a George Michael album tinged with lush vocals and a jazzy score.Ordinary Days is another very good song though suffers in comparison to the three classic songs of Creative, Stargazing and All In Good Time. The covers are all excellent though special mentiom must go to You Dont Know Me and A Song For You which sound like someone singing who has perfected his craft after being in the business for years.
A fantastic debut album that sounds like nothing you would expect of someone who has won a television reality show. Give it a go - you will be very glad that you did.

thumbs down!!!!
Not what I was expecting.Too much bandy jazzy. I wish they choose one style and kept there.Instead, it's a mash of all styles and looks added up. Pity.
