4.0 out of 5 stars Useful essays on an essential doctrine 24 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a collection of essays on the doctrine of justification (also available as a reprint from Wipf & Stock). Fourteen essays explore the doctrine itself, its place in Paul, the gospels and James, and apply it to our lives and how it contrasts with Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Japanese Buddhism and Islam.

Particular highlights were Ronald Fung's essay on James, which provided a cogent harmonisation with the teachings of Paul; Russell Shedd on Justification and Personal Christian Living which challenged me to have a Christ-centred focus and stability amidst the vagaries of life; and Sunand Sumithra on implications for Hinduism which gave a brilliantly brief explanation of the essentials of Hinduism and showed how justification is attractive in providing relief from duty religion.

This isn't light reading, and perhaps the essays on Paul, which do touch on the New Perspective, are a bit dated given all that has happened in this area since 1992. However, this book does provide thoughtful reading about the great doctrine of Christianity.
