Product Description

CD Description

This Cd includes 25 great tracks not found on other collections. A fantastic set of rare and obscure material recorded for King Records by one of the most revered R&B groups. The Five Royales can justly lay claim to be amongst the founding fathers of soul music. Anybody familiar with James Brown's early recorded work (in the mid and late 50's) can be in little doubt that J.B. based his work almost entirely on what he heard and saw the Five Royales did at King Records. This Cd features a fantastic set of rare and obscure material recorded for King Records by one of the most revered R&B groups; The Five Royales.

Now You Can Complete Your "5" ROYALES on KING RECORDS Collection.... 6 July 2011
By J. H. Mccarthy - Published on Amazon.com
As I stated in my review of It's Hard But It's Fair: King Hits and Rarities, owning it, along with RHINO's Anthology: Monkey Hips & Rice and COLLECTABLE's Very Best of still left you short a couple of tracks for a complete collection of their KING RECORDS singles from the 1950's. This problem has now been eliminated with the release of EL TORO'S Right Around the Corner Rare & Undiscovered Gems. The missing tracks are "Devil With The Rest" (KING 4744-B) and "You Didn't Learn It At Home" (KING 4770-B). Due to the compilation's title, I was expecting a little more in the "Undiscovered Gems" department, but besides the two missing from action tracks I've listed, the other 23 are readily available between the RHINO, ACE and COLLECTABLES discs. That's not to say this release is unworthy, far from it! Sporting nice artwork and pictures, and a lengthy booklet containing quite a bit of discographical information (but not complete), it's a nice addition to the "5" ROYALES canon. All tracks sound great, and are not the usual hits found on other collections, so they do squeak by with the "rare and undiscovered" moniker. All in all a worthy addition to your "5" ROYALES collection, and an absolute must for the completist......

Other fine "5" ROYALES CD's to buy and enjoy: All Righty: Apollo Recordings and Catch That Teardrop - The Best of the Home of the Blues 1960-1964 Sessions

CD Collection of the "5" Royales on King Still Incomplete 21 July 2011
By Tom Mack - Published on Amazon.com
El Toro always does a fine job with the graphics & music on its reissues. I am sure this is also true of their recent "5" Royales compilation. I was fortunate enough to interview the "5" Royales in July 1992 for Discoveries magazine, and I have been very interested in their discography ever since. I am always hopeful that additional "5" Royales masters will continue to be released in the digital format. Ace [U.K.] included two longtime CD-omitted King masters on their "I Know It's Hard But It's Fair" retrospective [specifically the great Miami Beach-recorded "Why" from the last "5" Royales King session [2/3/60] and "I Can't Stand Losing You" (first appearing on the 1978 LP "17 Original Greatest Hits" and missing in action since].[[ASIN:B0009A6MX0 It's Hard But It's Fair: King Hits and Rarities] As I am a completist when it comes to this group, I will certainly order the El Toro set as soon as it comes back in stock. Unfortunately, it does not do much to remedy the unreleased "5" Royales' King masters situation. One missing master that springs immediately to mind is the alternate 1961 version of "Dedicated To The One I Love" [King 5453] in which King overdubbed a female chorus to make the "5" Royales original version sound more like the Shirelles hit cover version. Also, alternate takes exist of the following King tunes ["Come On & Save Me, takes 2,3,6"; "Get Something Out Of It, takes 2,4,5"; "Just As I Am, takes 4,6,9"] that were recorded at Beltone Studio in NYC on 6/26/56. A cassette tape of this 6/26/56 session circulated on the collectors' market in the 1990's. In addition, "Good Looking Woman" was recorded in NYC on 12/19/54 and was assigned a King master number [K-5812] but has never been released in any format. I hope some reissue label will dig deeper in the vaults to find the remaining King masters. The "5" Royales work on Todd is also long overdue for a high quality release by some enterprising label. I am very pleased with the apparent renaissance of interest in this great R&B group [including the upcoming Steve Cropper tribute[[ASIN:B004ZQBP0O Dedicated]
