El Toro always does a fine job with the graphics & music on its reissues. I am sure this is also true of their recent "5" Royales compilation. I was fortunate enough to interview the "5" Royales in July 1992 for Discoveries magazine, and I have been very interested in their discography ever since. I am always hopeful that additional "5" Royales masters will continue to be released in the digital format. Ace [U.K.] included two longtime CD-omitted King masters on their "I Know It's Hard But It's Fair" retrospective [specifically the great Miami Beach-recorded "Why" from the last "5" Royales King session [2/3/60] and "I Can't Stand Losing You" (first appearing on the 1978 LP "17 Original Greatest Hits" and missing in action since].[[ASIN:B0009A6MX0 It's Hard But It's Fair: King Hits and Rarities] As I am a completist when it comes to this group, I will certainly order the El Toro set as soon as it comes back in stock. Unfortunately, it does not do much to remedy the unreleased "5" Royales' King masters situation. One missing master that springs immediately to mind is the alternate 1961 version of "Dedicated To The One I Love" [King 5453] in which King overdubbed a female chorus to make the "5" Royales original version sound more like the Shirelles hit cover version. Also, alternate takes exist of the following King tunes ["Come On & Save Me, takes 2,3,6"; "Get Something Out Of It, takes 2,4,5"; "Just As I Am, takes 4,6,9"] that were recorded at Beltone Studio in NYC on 6/26/56. A cassette tape of this 6/26/56 session circulated on the collectors' market in the 1990's. In addition, "Good Looking Woman" was recorded in NYC on 12/19/54 and was assigned a King master number [K-5812] but has never been released in any format. I hope some reissue label will dig deeper in the vaults to find the remaining King masters. The "5" Royales work on Todd is also long overdue for a high quality release by some enterprising label. I am very pleased with the apparent renaissance of interest in this great R&B group [including the upcoming Steve Cropper tribute[[ASIN:B004ZQBP0O Dedicated]
