Rift is an unique book, designed in an accordion-book format. The book is about the size of a palm and comes with a beautiful slipcase.
The book is created by James Jean, one of the very talented artists of our times. The art is haunting and beautiful, as you would expect.
When the covers are pulled apart, you get to see two pieces of art on a wide canvas, intersecting each other. To see each art piece on its own, you can collapse the sections belonging to the other piece. And there are gold paint painted on top of the actual print for selected elements, like the rain and ornaments. On the other side, you have the sketches displayed in the same format.
With its creative presentation, this book is a work of art for its construction and content.

Nothing much to say really, it is beautiful, well designed, delicate, a treasure of a book, all I have come to expect of James Jean.

Beautiful, impractical, QC Issues

I love James Jean's work, and treasure Process Recess 3 (can't afford the others which are out of print) Kindling, and XOXO... but this isn't really on-par value wise
I had to return it it 3 times due to printing issues... covers misaligned, pages glued together, etc. I finally just took a refund.
I loved the artwork, but it didn't seem like something I would really need to revisit, let alone deal with having to ship it back and forth to find a single decently printed copy.
Maybe the quality control has been worked out since I got it, but I don't feel like I am really missing it

When purchasing this compilation, please take note of dimensions. It is shorter and thinner than most paperback books you'd find in your local store. Don't expect to get a large collaboration of paintings and illustrations that you can stand and look at from a distance.
But that is really what's pretty neat about this "book". There's more than a handful of unique pieces of art that are compiled into these small hard covers. James Jean, living up to his reputation, doesn't disappoint with any of them. Yes, some of them and are slightly obscure, much of his artwork is very obscure, and not to be expected portraying vast innocence.
These pieces betray neither his name, or the reputation of his individual pieces of art. If anything, it's encouraged me to continue keeping an eye on James.

James Jean, living up to his reputation, doesn't disappoint with any of them.
