3.0 out of 5 stars Great game but... 14 Dec. 2013

Edition:Collector's Edition|Verified Purchase
since the game went free to play the population playing rift has dropped significantly and there are now far fewer servers than ever before and even they seem empty. Again another game which could have been a great contender for the top MMO crown but like so many others they failed to deliver.

The MMO market has undergone a vast change with so many F2P games out there and yet as the leading MMO game has proven there are millions of people prepared to pay for a good subscription based model. Shame too many games copy the bad things from the leading MMO game i.e. making content with the assumption that all your customers are 12 or younger and then treating them with contempt.

Rift should have turned the MMO market back to how it was at its peak and yet they went for the easy money route and the game suffers for this

3.0 out of 5 stars Good setting, not my favourate game 7 April 2013
Edition:Collector's Edition|Verified Purchase
When this first came out long ago I loved the story for it but I confess Ive not played it in quite some time. As a setting, Rift's universe has a lot of promise and is a really unique, promising start for a franchise, more than an mmo. Had this been an RTS or something else first, it might have done better, but as such, it launched with little more than a name to go with. Sadly, that wasn't enough to carry it along for me.

Unfortunately, this game suffers from the WoW Clone syndrome so many games of that generation went through. If your looking for something radically different, this isn't for you.

It did however have the unique dynamic event system in the form of invasions, which make the game that little bit more appealing than a regular wow clone, but not enough, I digress, for me to maintain long term interest.

Its a promising franchise, that needs some novels and even extended fiction like a board game, but as an mmo, it has a limit to where it can go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rift Collector's Edition 28 Oct. 2011
Edition:Collector's Edition
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Even six months in I am enjoying this game. It has some of ther best support I have seen in a game. Whilst bordering on the grind it does have many redeeeming features. Trion has started off with a very safe and secure launch and is pushing out content at an exponential rate. If they keep up the good work they will end up been one of the stalwarts of the genre for years to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many Rifts? 12 May 2011
Edition:Collector's Edition
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I did not play the Beta for this game nor have I seen much about it besides what I could see on the main website but from reading reviews it was a good WoW cloan with extra bits:)

I ended buying the game from America as I was there with business and got the Collector's Edition for £40 and yes you can buy the game from anywhere unlike WoW it isn't restricted by Region, you simply select EU or US servers when you install, I found this kinda cool so they get a point here.

My first impression of the game... was more like Guild Wars until I finished the starting zone and moved on to the real world where the game borrows from every game ever made which is nothing wrong if indeed it would have surpassed the games that it did borrow from.

So in a nutshell, game is like WoW but:

Quests:
Standard go here get this speak to that go kill 10 things go collect 10 things, daily quests such as crafting ones where you make this or that. Now the bonus is that in RIft you don't quite end up going back to deliver quest but you move forward to next area and finish them there. Guild quests also for Guild XP. Guild talent points and guild only spells... ie: increase resistance by 10 for 1 hour, decrease home portals... and so forth. Items from mobs do drop 100%

Rifts:
More like an area quest from WAR, you go there kill a few waves, kill boss at end bang you get rewards. Most of the time you will run past them and do your quests. The Rifts are for different levels and difficulty, ie Minor, Major Rifts, Rifts that you can open... Anything big and you will need a raid to close them, Minor rifts are soloable... which is a bit lame when you kill 2 3 waves and then someone comes along and kills the boss.
