Book Description

19 July 2007
Lt.-Gen. Sir Garnet Wolseley commented that history would record the formation of the Volunteers Movement as one of the most remarkable events in the century. In this study of the Rifle Volunteer Movement, the author Ian Beckett has drawn from a wide range of primary source material such as official, regimental, local and private repositories. He has been able to put into perspective the Movement within the structure of the Victorian and Edwardian social, political and military affairs from its formation in 1859 to its absorption in the Territorial Force in 1908.

5.0 out of 5 stars A long-serving volunteer's review 19 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
This book is a good book! It first appeared in 1982, and Pen & Sword are to be congratulated in having the foresight to reprint it now, when - yet again, the future of our reserve forces are under threat.
'Riflemen Form' is a carefully, and very widely, researched work. It makes a valuable contribution to the sparse literature of the now forgotten military Volunteer Movement of the late 1800s and very early 1900s. It will make interesting reading for anyone with service, or just an interest in recent and current military volunteer forces, such as the Territorial Army in its various forms. It will also be of interest to the reserve forces of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force, will find something of interest in its pages, if only echoes of the perennial struggle for recognition, let alone support, from elements of the parent services, and by government departments. No-one can foresee the future, and as a nation we have a long and ignoble history of neglecting, if not destroying, the valuable resource of auxiliary forces.
A book worth buying by individuals and reserve units.

This is an excellant book with a large amount of valuable data in it. The book would have got 5 stars but for the damage on some of the inner pages, otherwise content brilliant.

Lots of information but rather dull in layout and not an easy read, really just a reference book. A job that it does very well.
