I was already familiar with Patrick MacGill from his excellent memories of being an Irish Navvy when quite young.( That book is ' Children of the Dead End ' ).I am studying WW1 at present and have read Siegfried Sassoon's trilogy, which gives much detail, though largely from the Officers' viewpoint. MacGill joined the Rifles, so is a Rifleman, equivalent to a private. This book is made up of a collection of writings, which he largely scribbled down on the spot. It is full of informative, harrowing, sad and sometimes wryly amusing detail, but I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to know more about this senseless war.
