Roots Radics were for many years one of the very best instrumental reggae combos to hail from Jamaica. Scientist's career started at age 16, learning the art of production from the studio giants, but he soon branched out on his own with remix trickery that opened new expansive vistas and cool beats, without ever resorting to the woops and whistles sound effects of Lee Perry or the oppressive echo and disjointed cut & paste of King Tubby. Let loose Scientist on some top recordings by the Roots Radics and the results are predictably phenomenal. Chill (literally) as the ghouls, ghosts and vampires weave their mysterious drum 'n' bass magic across a timeless dub soundscape. Essential.

As any dub fanatic knows, the genre is crammed full of so-called classic albums that are tagged 'classics' but sound much like the countless other dub plates. But I have to say that Scientist's effort on this occasion is amazing in both his originality and sheer uniqueness. The gimmicky horror theme is pretty much extraneous to the substance of the record, a few screamed titles, a couple of eerie pianos, but this is just beautifully worked dub. Each track seems is a towering construction of towering bass and shimmering treble. Unlike say, King Tubby, Scientist eschews the straightforward cut and paste approach, instead working and reworking the track with plenty of detail ie. phasing, sound effects, cavernous echo, vocal samples, all skillfully mixed with a lightness of touch that saves it from becoming a gauche unlistenable record. As it is, this is one of the greatest dub records you can and should buy. It's up there with African Dub All Mighty, Vol 3&4, Pick-A-Dub and Blackboard Jungle Dub. A perfect place for the dub tyro to start.

An excellent album from start to finish, with superb bass and great percussion.
Stand out tracks include 'Blood On His Lips', which chugs along like a ganja powered steam train and 'Your Teeth In My Neck', which also has a killer melody.
The cover's good too.

Scientist also did 'Wins The World Cup', 'Meets the Space Invaders', and 'Encounters Pac-Man' and while they are all great albums, Rids The World is his crowning glory.

If you are thinking of adding some dub to your collection, you can get this, Augustus Pablo's 'King Tubby's Meets Rockers Uptown' and Jacob Millers 'Who Say Jah No Dread' and you'll have 3 of the best Dub albums made for about 25 sovs.

Highly Recommended.

At least one of the top three reggae albums of all time Can't say fairer than that Apart from a scene setting first track, the rest of the disc is loaded with classic full-on top dub style reggae Try and keep still while listening to this one!! Six stars Love it love it love it!

This vies with Wins the World Cup for his best collection of dubs on Greensleeves and, in fact, they hold various rhythms in common. The other reviews contrasting his style with the implied poor "cut and paste" technique (what!?) of King Tubby or with the "whistles" style of Scratch are plain silly. This gets a five for being an unassailable dub classic but loses one to acknowledge the effect of time - the stand out tracks remain ineffable but the rest can't escape their age. Bottom line is that this is an essential part of any dub collection along with World Cup. As an aside, to a new collector of dub, skip the boxing themed Scientist albums - they don't pass the test of time.
