5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Surprise, 19 Sep 2006
This review is from: Riding the Wall of Death (Paperback)
I bought this book because I was intrigued - I'd seen a Wall of Death years ago and loved it but didn't quite know why. This book answered that question, but in a subtle way. I'd kind of expected a dry historical narrative but instead I found myself locked into 'just one more chapter' reading, and in so doing got pulled into the world of the Wall, the funfair, the whole changing world of entertainment. The story is illuminated by colourful characters and fascinating anecdotes, whilst the pages are illustrated freely with bopth b/w and colour pictures which bring the Wall of Desath to life.

This is a book aimed not just at bikers and fairground enthusiasts, it's appeal goes much wider than that. It's not long (I read it in a day), but it packs a lot in. It's also the sort of book you'll want to keep and come back to. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story, Well Told and Illustrated, 25 Oct 2006
This review is from: Riding the Wall of Death (Paperback)
A wonderful book, almost worth buying for the pictures alone which really give a flavour of the times. The story is an engaging one too, well written and clearly deeply researched. The flow is mainly chronological but spaced out with specific chapters on things like the Globe of Death, how you get to become a Wall of Death rider and the thorny issue of accidents. I particularly enjoyed the pen pictures of some of the colourful characters associated with the Wall of Death which are scattered through the book, which helped bring the whole story to life. You can tell that Ford has 'been there done that' and his love of the Wall really comes through. Corble has a certain flair and clearly knows how to put a story together and keep the reader engaged. You don't have to be a bike fan to enjoy this book (I'm not), just someone who likes a good yarn. Highly recommended!
