Product Description

“My recipe is simple: tell people the necessity of finding something which can carry them through sickness, aging, and death, and don't be afraid to give them a glimpse of your joy of life. Tell people that the mind is like space: open, clear and limitless, and talk about both the way and the goal.”

In 1969, Ole and Hannah Nydahl became the first Western students of H.H. the 16th Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu tradition of yogis in Tibetan Buddhism. After their years of practice in the Himalayas, Karmapa requested them to teach and start centers in his name. They have continued this work ever since. For nearly forty years, until her death in 2007, Hannah translated and organized for the main lamas of the lineage, and Ole, himself a lama, has now started over six hundred growing centers around the world.

The Nydahl’s work in the West starts in 1972 with an audience with the Queen of Denmark. A basement in historical Copenhagen becomes the first Tibetan Buddhist center on the European continent, and rusted-through VW buses with racecar qualities get them everywhere. Karmapa’s visit to Denmark in 1974 then opens up the world . . .

Riding the Tiger is the inside story of the establishment of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. In his refreshingly unsentimental style, Lama Ole shares all aspects of the work, highlighting both healthy and unhealthy tendencies. Shining through the whole story is the Buddha’s ultimate aim, and the goal of Lama Ole’s life: to fully develop beings, to bring them to a state of such complete joy, fearlessness, and love that their every action blesses the world.

The Grand Adventure! 12 Jan 2012

I first met Ole Nydahl during one of the many trips recounted in this book, a Powha in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1990.

In person, the first thing that struck me about him was his obvious intelligence, followed quickly by his incredibly good looking girlfriend. Lama Ole had trained originally to become a college professor and he still has a flair for making Tibetan Buddhism come alive in ways that westerners find inspiring and really get their teeth into.

As I stayed with him for several days i was deeply impressed with his friendliness, openness and his caring for the people who came to him. Also I was impressed that although he was twelve years older than me he had far more energy and stamina.

As I listened I learned that Lama Ole Nyhdal was a close disciple of the most famous and powerful Lama in modern history, the Sixteenth Karmapa. After training them for four years in the himalayas the Karmapa sent Lama Ole and his wife out to start buddhist centers all over the world in his name. And he certainly chose wisely because ole nydahl seemed almost supernaturally equipped to do so: fluent in Danish, English, German (and to me most impressively)Tibetan.

So, as if all that wasn't enough, when it was time to leave I went up and touched forheads with him (a traditional and ordinary gesture of friendship)he gave me a spiritual zap that was so strong it didn't wear off till four days later when the dentist gave me nitrous oxide (Greetings from the Sixteenth Karmapa!).

Later, on the plane flying home, feeling my forehad chakra blown open from the blessing-zap, I wondered at the incredible luck of actually meeting such a person as Lama Ole.

My only regret is that I didn't latch on and go along for some of the adventure myself. Imagine flying and driving all over the world, in dangerous jungles, over vast deserts, founding centers for karmapa everywhere and always driving too fast in borrowed cars! It must have been major, major fun.

Best of luck to everyone.
