4.0 out of 5 stars It is okay, 20 Jun 1999

This is the only book I've read of this series, but I think that both "The Saddle Club" series and the "Thouroughbred" series are better. If you are looking for a book about Lipizzan horses, then read it. But if your looking for books all about horses and fun things in them, then read the "Saddle Club" series. All in all, it's not a bad book, but I have definatly read better ones.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wavering, predictable plot., 8 Feb 1998
By A Customer
This latest entry in the Treasured Horses was a far cry from the adventure and historically accurate backgrounds of the first three titles. The previous three volumes were set in early 1900s Oregon, Revolutionary War Virginia, and Civil War Vermont. Riding School Rivals is set in present-day Maryland, and is characteristicized by a weak, wavering, and predictable plot. The book goes from being about two girls fighting over a horse (who gets the horse is pretty much obvious from the start) to being about their ridiculous, petty, pathetic arguements over who's a better rider. To make it worse, the ending was terrible - the two actualy become friends! This was a terrible book and why they stuck it on the otherwise great Treasured Horses series I have no idea. But it has almost ruined a near-flawless series - supposed to have been, according to an add by the publisher, Scholastic, in a summer add in Publisher's Weekly, "Thrilling horse stories in historical settings." That does not describe Riding School Rivals, which is not set in the past, and is certainly not thrilling. Even if you loved the first three books, don't read this one. It's terrible.
