5.0 out of 5 stars Riding The Outlaw Trail, 5 Feb 2004

This review is from: Riding the Outlaw Trail: Following in the Footsteps of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paperback)
Having always been an enthusiast of the Wild West and dreamt as a child of being Butch or Sundance, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this book.

Written skillfully interweaving not only the stories of Simon and Richard who followed the trails of the famous outlaws, but also the history of Butch and Sundance, the Wild Bunch and the Super-Possee who tried to track them wherever they went.

A must read book which I couldn't put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Grit, 18 Mar 2004

This review is from: Riding the Outlaw Trail: Following in the Footsteps of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paperback)
I know the author and so made a point of buying and reading the book. I didn't expect the tale that unfolded - this is a gritty story of a hard expedition across the vast empty spaces of the south-western US. Horses go lame, a couple of them die, expedition members break bones, tempers fray, friendships are broken and made. It's a tale of the generosity of the ordinary country people they meet and also an insight into some of the less savoury people they encounter. I don't suffer poor writing gladly and I was pleased to find that this was a well written account that really keeps you on the edge of your seat eager to read what happens next. Simon's extensive knowledge of the history of Butch and Sundance is put to good use in providing some interesting background info about each place they ride through along the trail. The trail ride and the history progress alongside each other reaching a climax - the end of the trail and the end of Butch and Sundance.

I thoroughtly enjoyed this book, I just wanted to be there with them, riding through the wilds and tracking down wild west history. It is a well written book which sweeps you along with the adventure, although I could have done with a bit more description. My only criticism is that there are no pictures, I'd really have liked to have seen what the people and horses looked like! However, the narrative kept me transfixed and I found the book hard to put down. If you liked this, try "A Girl a Horse and a Dog"
