How on Earth is it justified to have a higher price to purchase a copy of this book for kindle than paperback?

Blame Steve Jobs. He's responsible for a lot of the stupid restrictions on pricing of ebooks. Amazon can set their own prices on physical books, while eBook prices can only be set by the publisher. That's what accounts for the difference (i.e Amazon have discounted the paper book, but aren't allowed to discount the kindle version.

I thought £5.69 for the ebook to be a very fair price.

Prices have changed. The paperback (that the kindle price used to exceed) is now £9.48.
