Product Description

Product Description

Snowdonia's very best ridge walking is described in this guidebook, taking walkers through the Carneddau, Glyders and Tryfan, Snowdon range, Moelwyns, Nantlle, Rhinogs, Arans, Cader Idris. In describing the ridges the author has tried to be both readable and accurate, which should help to explain the unusual layout. The raw material of the route - map, information, route description - is presented in four no-frills pages, while the general chit-chat and photographs are allowed to follow on at their leisure. This means you have the option to glance through one or the other according to need, and without having to plough through an unnecessary amount of verbiage. Because the book is designed primarily for the hill-walking enthusiast, the author has commandeered space traditionally reserved for introductory notes and lengthy topographical descriptions (using photographs to help compensate in this latter respect) in order to explore the hill-walking experience beyond what is normally possible in a guidebook.

About the Author

Steve lived in Snowdonia for 20 years, during which he gained an intimate knowledge of walks and climbs in the region. Among a number of mountaineering books he wrote at this time, the best known is his highly influential and now classic Scrambles in Snowdonia, which was largely responsible for reviving interest in this esoteric sport. He was also a keen ice climber and supplemented Welsh waterfall routes with trips to Scotland, where he lists the 'big five' traditional Ben Nevis classics of Tower Ridge, Point Five Gully, Observatory Ridge, Zero Gully and North-East Buttress among his all-time favourites. For several years Steve was a columnist for High Mountain Sports and Country Living magazines. He currently works as an actor and playwright.

This is a very useful little book. It describes the major ridges, access and difficulty levels in detail but without going into boring details. it is also easy to carry and the phot's are excellent.

This review is from: Ridges of Snowdonia: The Best Ridge Walking (Cicerone Guide) (Paperback)
I have a number of guidebooks and I try to be subjective about all however there are a few that go beyond the 'guide' standard and move into the personal 'worth reading' style that makes you want to get 'out there'. Steve Ashton is the consumate professional combined with an enveloping and cosseting style for all levels - Trust his words, get in the car and follow his wisdom - You will not regret it! This book will enable you to follow your dream and see British landscape at it's best. Buy it!
