This was a book that I first read in childhood and purchased in order to do some research on the American West and why as a subject that had once been popular with children in the 1950s and 60s but today is no longer a topic of interest for many. As such interest in the American West has waned as a serious subject for historical research although unlike many schools in the USA it still is a topic that GCSE students in England and Wales can study. That however is reliant on teachers themselves being interested.

I am knowing the famous strip "Riders of the Range", drawn by Frank Humphris, directly from the magazine EAGLE,
where also other brilliantly drawn strips have been published (like Dan Dare; The Baden Powell Story; Alfred the Great).
I am lookin forward to any new reprint of these characters.

Format: Paperback
Softcover, colour, 64 pages, 9 1/4 in. by 13 in. Stories and artwork begin on page 10. Published in 1990 by Hawk Books in London, UK. Designed by Mike Higgs. The "Riders of the Range" book was one of a series of four "Eagle Classics" volumes (others were "Fraser of Africa" and "Harris Tweed" and "P.C. 49" by different writers and artists) celebrating the 40th anniversary of EAGLE, the British weekly illustrated paper for boys. The "Riders of the Range" series was created by writer Charles Chilton, originally for radio. Artists for the full-page colour strip included Jack Daniel, whose artwork is shown in this volume in the 23-page story "The Cochise Affair" and Frank Humphris, the artist for most of the years of publication, whose artwork is shown in the 32-page story, "The War With The Sioux" which includes scenes from the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The main characters were Jeff Arnold and his sidekick, Luke; their adventures appeared for twelve years in EAGLE. The team of Chilton and Humphris produced some of the best-researched and most entertaining Western stories ever published, and this book is an excellent introduction to their fine work.

Always liked one of the stories in this because it was in the 1971 Wham annual. The General Custer story was one of my boyhood favourites.
