4.0 out of 5 stars Riders to the Midnight Sun, 29 July 2002
This review is from: Riders to the Midnight Sun (Paperback)
If you are considering packing in your job and leaving the monotony of working life for a spot of foreign travel this is the kind of life-affirming book that gives you the push to do it.
David Llwelyn hits thirty and he and his girlfriend decide to embark on a bicycle ride through the former Soviet Union in an attempt to do something memorable before it is too late.
The book really captures all the excitement of making a decision to do something and the whole psychological experience of opening your mind to new experiences. The author is realistic though and does not gloss over the times when he felt like giving up and returning to the comfort of his life in the West. Llwellyn is the kind of bloke you can imagine chatting to about his travels in the pub, not a travelling bore who 'does the travelling thing' but does not really give you a feel for the countries they have been to and what life is like for the people they have met.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read, 19 Dec 2002
This review is from: Riders to the Midnight Sun (Paperback)
Really, I have recently finished this travelogue and I found it to be one of the most exciting and thought-provoking travel books I have read. It beats anything Theroux has written and even Eric Newby. It's not at all heavy, though it brushes up against some heavy things in the former Soviet union. It brings the place to life in a very entertaining way - which is so important for a successful travel book. Great characters, and really informative, especially about the Russian and Ukraininan nuclear scene. I highly recommend it.
