Reviews

Jack Nicholson and Cameron Mitchell star in this gritty western as two cowhands mistakenly identified as wanted killers. On their way to a new job in Waco, Texas, they find shelter at a cabin only to discover that their 'hosts' are men who have robbed a stagecoach and murdered the driver. When an avenging posse attacks the cabin, Nicholson and Mitchell escape but find themselves branded as 'outlaws' by the posse, who relentlessly pursue them with only one thing in mind - a hanging.

Ride in the Whirlwind is directed by Monte Hellman and written by Jack Nicholson. It stars Nicholson, Cameron Mitchell, Millie Perkins and Dean Stanton. Music is by Robert Jackson Drasnin and cinematography by Gregory Sandor.

Three honest cowboys stop to rest for the night at a cabin occupied by outlaws led by Blind Dick (Stanton). Upon awakening in the morning they find themselves surrounded by a vigilante posse and forced to flee as fugitives...

Filmed back to back with The Shooting in Kanab, Utah, Ride in the Whirlwind has something big to say without actually saying that much!

It's a sombre Western piece that deals in the tragedy brought about by a miscarriage of justice. It also finds Hellman and Nicholson reaching into the belly of the Western mythos and pulling out its guts to reveal a shallow hole of boredom and dirt covered grafters. This works to a large degree by way of the portrayals of weary cowboys (nice subtle performances by Nicholson and Mitchell really help) and the mundane ranch life of a family who are coerced into harbouring the fugitives. The air of authenticity and rich period detail, as well, is highly commendable. However, the laborious pace will annoy many and some actions and scenarios played out are a little hard to swallow. It's a mixed bag but very much a film that Western fans should see though. 7/10

DVD I viewed was taken from the Jack Nicholson Early Years Box Set (which also features the superior The Shooting). Print is fine but the colour is unfortunately not bold enough to highlight the location photography.

What a slow moving movie - Jack Nicholson in his younger years when he wrote it. The title does not match the pace of the film and I am a fanatic for westerns and so I bought it through Amazon out of interest to see if Jack's performance matched his 'Easy Rider' role for pace - it did! The story all revolved around a miscarriage of justice which shows the danger of the lynch-mob mentality. It's OK to watch if you don't have anything better to do.

Absolutely amazing! You have to watch this film, if anything because it's just such a simple movie with a simple plot and very simple dialogue. By that I don't mean to say it isn't written well - on the contrary, that's precisely the reason why it is written well beacuse it is so simple. The language used in the movie, the dialogue between the characters seems very authentic indeed, and there isn't any hint of Sergio Leone stylisation of the dialogue at all. That's why it's so different and unique from other westerns. And this is a really cool additon to the western genre. Both Monte Hellman who directed the movie and co produced it along with Jack Nicholson who also wrote the damn thing can leave with their head held high. Honestly - it's shot beautifully, uses minimal production design being shot mostly outdoors in the countryside and ther is very little action in it. Now i've see lots of Spaghettu Westerns with a lot of action in them, and although some are good, some ar actually really quite bad, because of the action in it. In Ride In the Whirlwind, there isn't any of that Leone style action in it that we've all come to know and love. Instead what we have is a great, neat little story about mistaken identity and the dynamic and drama that spawns between the characters as the film unfolds. Throughout, you're gripped. From begining, and then it carries you through the middle and then to that special ending. And what and ending. It leaves you wanting more. If there is ever to be a remake of a western, then Ride In the The Whirlwind should be it. In fact this is something that maybe Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez or even Brian De Palma should think about redoing. It's that good.Read more ›
