New Orleans born trumpeter Abram Wilson made a solid debut with his "Jazz Warrior" album and has managed to go one better with this exceptional follow up album.This is an ambitious,some would say, concept album with a very diverse set of musical influences incorporating Jazz,blues and hip-hop.The vocal tracks lay down the guidelines to the story of Albert Jenkins who wants to give up running his fathers jazz club and explore pastures aknew hence the shift in musical styles throughout the album.Tracks 1-3 are the main vocal tracks,which,after several listenings become quite enjoyable and you can see the purpose of Wilson including them on the album.For me,the highlite of the album is "I want it all" which is a low down and dirty delta blues number with a very catchy melody and Wilson and alto sax man Nathaniel Facey both taking excellent solos.
The music then moves on to Albert joining an acoustic brass hip-hop band which come across as funky,lively and actually quite enjoyable tracks (much to my surprise for a die hard jazz fan).We then move on to more jazz orientated tracks with one or two straight ahead swing orientated tracks and then back to the blues with "You already home" and "After the Storm" as Albert goes back home to New Orleans.
Despite the eclectic mix of musical styles,musicians and instruments involved(Tuba, acoustic steel guitar and harmonica also play a part)this is a very origional,but most importantly,very enjoyable album.
