Its high contrast and wide viewing angle make for easy viewing even when shooting outdoors.Still images in the camera can be enlarged and trimmed. With its zoom lever operation, it is possible to switch between two zoom speeds. This enables the full capabilities of the 28-200 mm 7.1x wide-angle zoom lens to be utilized. Using Ricoh's Smooth Imaging Engine III image processing engine, the R8 takes high-definition photography to a higher level. Offering a large 3.0-inch, 460,000-pixels TFT LCD, the R8 puts in extra ease to your framing and image composition.
With a 1:1 aspect square format photography function, it gives a resulting composition that differs from the standard rectangular vertical or horizontal format, giving a unique style convenient for blog photographs. Vibration correction functions helps compensate for camera shake when it is detected, reducing the blur that tends to occur in situations such as telephoto and macro photography. Face Recognition identifies faces in a scene to optimise focus, exposure and white balance for the faces. Ricoh's popular and powerful macro functions enable shooting of objects as close as 1cm with wide macro and as close as 25cm with telemacro.

We bought this camera to photograph maps for our website. It is the only camera I know of that has a 'skew correction' facility. It can be done on the computer afterwards but it is a real faff! This not only saves a lot of time, but also produces very high quality digital photos, ideal for showing off our best maps.
The other plus points include: It's light and easy to work out.
The instruction manual is clear and user friendly.
It's got a good, long lasting rechargable battery.
Good zoom and macro facilities.
Negative points: Some of the controls take a bit of getting used to, some are a bit fiddly and awkward.
It doesn't come with a protective carry case, which would be nice...
Overall, for our purposes, i.e. photographing flat documents etc, it's exactly what we wanted. Recommended!
