Book Description

6 May 2004

'If there is a better written, less pretentious book by an actor, then I have yet to read it. Undoubtedly the showbusiness book of the year' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

Famous as the lovable couch potato Jim Royle of The Royle Family, Ricky Tomlinson has entertained millions without ever leaving his armchair. Now, in his long-awaited autobiography, he surprises yet again with a remarkable story of love, hardship, humour, injustice and triumph.

His mother used to tell him that he had lived three lives, but even she miscounted. He has been a plasterer, banjo player, stand-up comic, union agitator, political activist, film extra, award-winning actor and unwilling guest of Her Majesty's prison service.

Renowned and respected for his honesty, wit and integrity, Ricky brings all of these qualities to his extraordinary, moving and inspiring story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick? Ricky me foot! 15 Jun 2004
By Patrick Duffy VINE VOICE
Whilst walking around Dublin during the Christmas I spotted this book. Although I've seen Ricky on television, I really knew nothing about him but this book made me laugh and cry. He comes across as honest and a down to earth soul, mixing it with the grass roots and with the upper crusts of society. But at the end of the day he's just plain "Ricky". When I started reading this book I found I couldn't leave it down, I just wanted to know what was going to happen next. Some of the stories are priceless and it is amazing to think what sort of life is behind the public face. I found it touching at times and, for me, it is that little bit of magic which makes it a "must have" book.

5.0 out of 5 stars a down to earth read 13 Nov 2003
i was expecting this book to be brilliant and i wasn't dissapointed. Ricky tells a brilliant story and it made me laugh out loud several times a few surprising bits as well. Something that struck me was his son clifton's resemblance to Ralf little his screen son in the royle familly good casting. My favourite bit was when he was in Boy's from the blackstuff he thumped Bernard Hill yosser at a party because in rickys words ("he was being a twat)and the two still don't speak Bernards loss. Anyway if you want any more read it yourself. Well done Rick.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first biography 1 Feb 2004
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book as a present for myself purely on the basis of a few lines I'd heard on the radio. I have never read a biography/autobiography before, possibly never will again as I cannot imagine anything else entertaining me as much as this. The humour, pathos and self deprecation make you want to read on. My only criticism is that it had to reach a conclusion, if only it had been fiction and a series of books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The One and Only Rick 24 Dec 2003
This was a great read. It is one of the few books I have read in recent years that I found hard to put down. This is Ricky's tale and it is all here-:Adventures in the building trade, dabblings with the National Front,an outrageous prison sentence and his entry into the world of showbiz. It is all told with great humour, warmth and a refreshing dose of honesty.Ricky admits he han't always been Mr. Nice and he knows where he has went wrong along the road. Still, this is ultimately a great story of success and Ricky's great personality shines through.Well reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Autobiography! 23 July 2013
By ReviewBlog51 TOP 500 REVIEWER
Ricky Tomlinson' fans will really enjoy this warm, witty and brutally honest account of his life and career.

Ricky's personal life would make an excellent gritty British movie, jailed on conspiracy charges after the 1971 national building strike, blacklisted by the building industry following his release, unable to find work only to become a popular stand up comedian and go onto have a fantastic career in movies like 'Raining Stones' and 'Riff Raff', directed by Ken Loach, and starring in television series like 'Clocking Off', 'Cracker', and most famously: 'Brookside' and 'The Royal Family'.

Ricky is a talented writer and it was great to find out more about the man behind the many roles. With celebrity anecdotes galore, hilarious stories, priceless and forthright opinions about Margaret Thatcher and fellow scouser Cilla Black. Unlike the latter, Ricky has never forgotten his Liverpool routes and comes across as a genuine, kind and thoughtful man.

'Ricky' is an honest, inspirational and highly entertaining book. It gave me a great insight into the world of Ricky Tomlinson, and I like him even more now after reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ricky 23 April 2012
By Dolly
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The only thing I hated about this book was I knew it had to end. I just couldn't put it down and I have missed lots of my favorite tv programmes because I would rather keep reading than wait to know what happened next in the book.I got so annoyed at one time reading my Kindle when the battery warning came on and I had to go and look for the charger! This book is one of those that had me laughing and crying at the same time. Some of his one liner discriptions are brilliant.

What a life Ricky has led, I knew he had been locked up but never, ever knew the full details. The poor man seems to have had things dropped on him from a great height over and over, how he got through this, I'll never know. Full marks to him though for not backing down and giving in to the authorities when he had done nothing wrong. I found myself cheering him on!
It's obvious that Ricky has dozens of true friends who stood by him through thick and thin. They were always there for him when he needed them the most.

I loved Ricky's honesty when he tells of those "stars" who have forgotten their roots but are happy to associate themselves with Liverpool when it suits them, I just loved that bit, we all know who they are, don't we?

When you consider how he struggled for money through the years, it just shows the character of the man to hear he has donated a million pounds of his own money to Alder Hey Childrens hospital. What an amazing thing to do.
Excellent book,I'm really sorry it has come to an end. I recommend this book to all readers.
