5.0 out of 5 stars A Purple Patch, 18 Feb 2011
This review is from: Ricky Sings Again/Songs By Ricky (Audio CD)
For me these two albums represent the high point of Rick's Imperial career. More mature than his previous two albums and less mainstream pop than the next couple Rick delivers some tight rockabilly ably supported by James Burton and the rest of his band. The hits such as Lonesome Town and Never be Anyone Else are obvious highlights but there are several other gems such as Be True to You, Blood From a Stone, One minute to One and You tear Me Up. James Burton plays some outstanding solos and it is on these tracks that his reputation was firmly establised. There are also some alternative takes and outtakes (though why the studio as opposed to film version of Cindy is omitted defies belief) but the meat of this release is the two original albums. Strong songs, well arranged and performed and well above average for the era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Sings Again/Songs by Ricky, 15 Feb 2011
This review is from: Ricky Sings Again/Songs By Ricky (Audio CD)
Another great album, all his albums have such a great feel to them and take you right back to the sixties. Very happy time and many memories. I am never disappointed by his music. He definitely had a great ear for a good tune.

3.0 out of 5 stars albums 3 & 4 from his Imperial years, 1 Nov 2007
This review is from: Ricky Sings Again/Songs By Ricky (Audio CD)
Continuing the format of albums 1 & 2 this Cd presents the next stage in Rick's career. Digitally remastered, this collection once again features additional tracks including b-sides of singles, alternative versions and outtakes as well as extensive sleevnotes by the actor James Ritz.

' Rick Nelson sings ' (1959) is generally regarded by most critics as his most well rounded album and included no less than 4 million selling singles. These included ' Lonesome town ' & ' Never be anyone else but you '. As it was seen by some fans as a mini greatest hits it suffered somewhat in sales compaired to it's predecessors. However, this mistake of releasing so many singles from an album was not repeated on future album releases.

' Songs by Ricky ' (1959) is cheifly noted for showing Ricky as becoming more mature and helping to showcase his guitarists James Burtons reputation amongst the great players of this or any other day. Rick was also developing at this point as a rythum guitarist. This album, like it's predessor also shows Rick beginning to explore a genre of music he would go on to make whole albums of: country with songs like ' Half Breed ' & ' Restless Kid '. There is also an experiment with Rick as a jazz saloon singer on the track ' So long '. The remaining tracks aon these albums continue the ballads & rockers format popular of the day.
