Ricky Gervais - Politics,
This review is from: Ricky Gervais Live 2 - Politics [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
After 'Animals' Gervais said he would be doing a new stand-up show early in the new year, so it was fortunate that I stumbled across a ticket hotline website and saw that tickets were on sale. I immediately bought some and wasnt surprised to see that they sold out pretty much everywhere within a couple of days. Since the success of The Office, Gervais has been acknowledged as a brilliant British comedian but instead of being type casted as a David Brent character he's broken away from the phenomenal success of The Office and instead is making a name for himself as an ccomplished stand up comedian. This is not surprising as Gervais has a 'natural' way about him that means his jokes and stories don't seem rehearsed - they just seem to come naturally to him as if he's speaking to a friend. Politics opens up with a short video which sets the tone straight away - not only is it very very funny as he outlines "three political hot potatoes" on a passer-by in a wheelchair (actually played by The Office producer Ash Atalla) but the dialogue is very 'below the belt'. This isn't a problem for those who aren't easily offended- it's just Gervais's way of light-heartedly having a joke. Gervais goes on to discuss life outside of 'the office' and trouble being recognised and being called "Brent" but the bit where Gervais talks about his "favourite leaflet" had me in stitches. Not only is the leaflet funny in itself (Gervais was giggling through most of it) but he has a way of saying things and talking about things that just make them even more hysterical. I was disappointed when the show ended- I could easily have sat there all night and listened to Ricky Gervais discuss politics, and one things for sure- politics has never been so funny!

Good, but nothing new if you've listened to Ricky's XFM show,
By Steven Patrick "Morrissey" (Manchester) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ricky Gervais Live 2 - Politics [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
This DVD is good in and of itself, but if you've listened to Ricky's show on XFM you have probably heard most of the observations that are on this disc (which Steven actually said on the show in jest at one time). Whether it's Ricky discussing spastics, talking about Humpty Dumpty, or telling the fable of the industrious mouse, you've heard it all before if you've listened to the show. If you haven't, you'll love this DVD.By far the best bit on the DVD is the interview with Karl Pilkington, it's worth the £15 alone. I've always thought he was the funniest of the 3 on XFM.

Old people don't eat Twix!,
This review is from: Ricky Gervais Live 2 - Politics [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
First of all it must be conceded that Gervais' interview wth his radio producer Karl Pilkington is the funniest thing here - he is very much in his element with his sarcastic yet Socratic questioning around this person's freakishly simple but apparently logically thought out opinions and perspective on life and so forth. I think the subject matter presents a problem - while he clearly demonstrates both an interest and knowledge of the subject of animals, the supposed theme of politics does not permutate this DVD. Having seen 'Animals' first I expected the same level of expertise used in the theme of 'Politics', however this was a much more loosely themed show and so Rickey Gervais' sarcastic humour was less thoroughly backed up with authority as it was previously. I think a little more effort could have improved this show, however it is a good, refreshing piece of stand up humour...now if only he could have matched 'the mermaid - the acceptable face of bestiality?' in this DVD. This show is very good value for money at the reduced prices I've seen it at recently, even if you only watch the Karl Pilkington interview!
