5.0 out of 5 stars Ricky Gervais - Politics, 24 Aug 2004
By "depa4d" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
After 'Animals' Gervais said he would be doing a new stand-up show early in the new year, so it was fortunate that I stumbled across a ticket hotline website and saw that tickets were on sale. I immediately bought some and wasnt surprised to see that they sold out pretty much everywhere within a couple of days. Since the success of The Office, Gervais has been acknowledged as a brilliant British comedian but instead of being type casted as a David Brent character he's broken away from the phenomenal success of The Office and instead is making a name for himself as an ccomplished stand up comedian. This is not surprising as Gervais has a 'natural' way about him that means his jokes and stories don't seem rehearsed - they just seem to come naturally to him as if he's speaking to a friend.

Politics opens up with a short video which sets the tone straight away - not only is it very very funny as he outlines "three political hot potatoes" on a passer-by in a wheelchair (actually played by The Office producer Ash Atalla) but the dialogue is very 'below the belt'. This isn't a problem for those who aren't easily offended- it's just Gervais's way of light-heartedly having a joke. Gervais goes on to discuss life outside of 'the office' and trouble being recognised and being called "Brent" but the bit where Gervais talks about his "favourite leaflet" had me in stitches. Not only is the leaflet funny in itself (Gervais was giggling through most of it) but he has a way of saying things and talking about things that just make them even more hysterical. I was disappointed when the show ended- I could easily have sat there all night and listened to Ricky Gervais discuss politics, and one things for sure- politics has never been so funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Fantastic, 16 Jul 2004
Admitadly I am a Ricky Gervais fan and went there expecting to be in stitches, a late comer to the comedy scene I've found it hard to establish what makes him such a national treasure. As I watched the warm-up guy tell what were funny joke, delivered in a humourous way and made the audience laugh lightly, it always seemed as though he was trying to remember his lines and was thinking about how his jokes were coming across. As soon as Ricky Gervais came on the stage with a bottle of Grolsch and his common touch it suddenly felt as if you were with a mate at the pub. The way everytime he was going to say something outrageous (and trust me, this is NOT for the faint hearted), he squeeks or grins as if he knows what he says is extrememly controversial but is going to say it anyway just for the reaction. This innocence allows him to get away from several court cases but more importantly makes it the whole act a whole lot more genuine. Fantastic, genius at work

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply awesome, 6 Aug 2004
By Jonny G (Maidenhead, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I am a massive Gervais fan. Sice first coming across the Office, Ricky Gervais has proven to be one of the leading comedians of the modern day.

I saw him perform Politics live in Oxford, and it was by far the funniest night of my life. Gervais' swagger and self belief rub off on the crowd for what was a brilliant show.

Gervais fans everywhere will love this DVD, as it improves on the already brilliant Animals. If your easily offended, dont watch this. If you're not, you'll love it.
