Book Description

29 Sep 2011 Rick Steves' Rome
You can count on Rick Steves to tell you what you "really" need to know when traveling in the Eternal City of Rome.
With the self-guided tours in this book, you'll walk the same streets as the Caesars and discover the secrets of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Learn how to avoid the lines at the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica. Take a night walk across the city and enjoy floodlit fountains and piazzas. Then grab a sidewalk table at the locals' favorite trattoria and watch the world go by.
Rick's candid, humorous advice will guide you to good-value hotels and restaurants. You'll learn how to navigate the Rome Metro and which sights are worth your time and money. More than just reviews and directions, a Rick Steves guidebook is a tour guide in your pocket.

4.0 out of 5 stars very useful guide 11 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have just returned from a visit to Rome with my family, during which time we made extensive use of this travel guide. When visiting places like the Colosseum, St Peter's Basilica, etc I had expected to need the services of a tour guide to make the most of them, but Rick Steves gives a number of detailed itineraries round these places, with a very adequate explanation of what you are looking at and its history. So we did not use any tour guides at all, we followed Rick Steves, went round everything at our own pace and saved lots of money.

We also had a lovely day following Rick Steves "Heart of Rome Walk", which took us to all the must see places in Rome like the Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain etc. We intend to go back to Italy soon and I will certainly be buying Rick Steves Italy guide.

The book also includes a chapter on the ruins at Pompei, which we also visited but I think the suggestion of a day trip from Rome to see these and Naples would have been exhausting. Far better to stay for a couple of days and see everthing at your leisure.

I did not give Rick Steves five stars only because the chapter on the National Museum of Rome bore no relation to the actual layout of the exhibits so we could not find anything mentioned in his suggested tour. Possibly this was because the museum had reorganised the layout since the book was published, but it was still disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 9 Sep 2012
By Louise
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
We visited Rome last year. I never had this book then & only found out about Rick Steves' books when I was on a coach trip from Rome to Pompeii. We got chatting to a lady and her daughter from the USA and they showed me the book. I couldn't believe how much information in contained. I would recommend this book to anybody thinking of visiting Rome. It is very easy to read and packed with information that I think some other travel books may fail to include. I only wish Rick Steves' books also covered the USA, I think if he did travel books on major cities like New York, Washington DC etc then these books would also be superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't do Europe without Rick 5 Dec 2011
By Lewis Moore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My wife and I have been to Europe 4 times in the last 10 years. The most important companion for us is Rick Steves. Every time I go I purchase other guide books, but when it comes down to the best advice and recommendations, you cannot beat Rick. The Rome book is very thorough and every place He recommended came as he said, never over glossed, just honest advice. He also has the best advice on transportation needs which is where most guide books fail. Getting around Rome was a breeze with his directions.
Great book!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Useful 5 Dec 2011
By TravellingSunny - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoy Rick Steves' sense of humor, and he lays out the major tourist sites (as well as several not so major sites.) The format is easy to read, and the book contains a lot of very useful information for first time visitors to Rome. I specifically love the "walks" that are suggested in the book - scenic walking tours that you can do on your own with directions, what to look for, etc.

I'm giving it 4 rather than 5 stars because the book focuses a lot of attention on the very touristy areas west of the central train station, and doesn't give enough details about areas to the south and hardly any details about areas to the east. But, if you plan to stay/tour in the main historical center and/or Vatican City, then this book is fantastic!

This Rome travel guide is very practical, thorough, and easy to use. It includes descriptions, maps, and time saving ideas. Of particular interest is information on how to save money on meals, hotels, and sites. The ROMA Pass is an excellent example.
